San Antonio's famed Fiesta celebration that happens during this time of year might be pushed back just a little, but a Bonham Academy student is already earning the praise of Fiesta organizers. 

Kingsley Hernandez, a second grader at Bonham, won first place for City Council District 1 in the Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade Art Contest. 

The winning entry, inspired by the student's time spent with family during the pandemic, garnered a prize of $3,000 that will go toward Bonham’s art program. 

“I’ve never won anything like this before,” Hernandez said. “I’m really happy that I won. It is an honor.” 

The young art student said that when COVID first began, and students were sent home as precautionary measures became increasingly important, he would go on nature walks with his family. The winning entry features a blue background with a pastel oval in the center and a tree donning varying shapes and configurations. The piece is interpretive and certainly begs for the individual consumer to create their own meaning behind the work. 

Hernandez said the nature walks provided time surrounded by his loved ones and ample time to think. 

“The art is a reflection of this time with my family,” he said. 

Bonham visual arts teacher Morgan Oliver is proud of all of her students for putting themselves out there and thinking broadly about the world. 

“Participating in art contests takes bravery and confidence,” Oliver said. “Kingsley was able to take a conceptual idea, which can be challenging for elementary students, and bring it to life with visual imagery. I am so proud of his hard work and admire his ambition. I look forward to seeing Kingsley grow as an artist!” 

Oliver is overwhelmed by the $3,000 prize that comes with the award. She said it’s a blessing to receive it on behalf of Hernandez to inspire all of her students, who she credits with creativity and motivation.  

“I want to expose them to every art medium and give them as many art experiences as possible,” Oliver said. “Therefore, this funding will likely go towards the materials that are difficult to obtain with a standard budget. I would like to focus on sculpture, fiber arts, and photography. These kids are ready for it and I can't wait to share new materials with them!”

Bonham Academy principal David Nungaray said that art plays a crucial role in any setting, but especially during the pandemic it is important for student's to be able to express themselves. And his community is one that artistic to begin with.

"Bonham has a long-standing tradition of supporting the arts," Nungaray said. "Our programs were built in strong partnership between teachers, families, students, and our community. Having Kingsley win this award speaks to the years of dedication of community has had to the arts, and the belief that all children need to have these types of experiences. Our school is nestled in the arts districts, and it’s also a testament to our families who support these endeavors, and teachers who support the artistic development of our students."

Hernandez is excited to bring attention to his school, which he loves. He said he wants to show everyone how “awesome” Bonham is. He will continue his passion for art, prize or not.

“I learned that you can draw stuff based on your life and what’s in your imagination,” he said. 

Estudiante recibe reconocimiento por obra de arte ganadora de Fiesta

La famosa celebración de Fiesta en San Antonio que se lleva a cabo durante esta temporada del año se ha retrasado un poco, pero un estudiante de Bonham Academy ya está recibiendo reconocimiento por parte de los organizadores de Fiesta. 

Kingsley Hernandez, un estudiante de segundo grado en Bonham, ganó el primer lugar del Distrito 1 del Concejo Municipal en el Concurso de Arte de Texas Cavaliers River Parade. 

La obra ganadora, inspirada por el tiempo que el estudiante pasó con su familia durante la pandemia, ganó un premio de $3,000 que se otorgará al programa de arte de Bonham. 

“Nunca he ganado nada como esto antes”, dijo Hernandez. “Estoy muy contento de que gané. Es un honor”. 

El joven estudiante de arte dijo que cuando COVID comenzó y los estudiantes regresaron a casa a medida que aumentó la importancia de las medidas de precaución, él salía en caminatas con su familia por la naturaleza. La obra ganadora tiene un fondo azul con un óvalo pastel en el centro y un árbol donde cuelgan varias formas y configuraciones. Esta obra es interpretativa y definitivamente requiere que la audiencia cree su propio significado. 

Hernandez dijo que las caminatas en la naturaleza le proporcionaron tiempo en el que estaba rodeado por sus seres queridos y tenía mucho tiempo para pensar. 

“El arte es una reflexión de este tiempo con mi familia”, dijo él. 

La maestra de artes visuales en Bonham, Morgan Oliver, está orgullosa de todos sus estudiantes por hacer el esfuerzo y pensar ampliamente sobre el mundo. 

“El participar en concursos de arte requiere de valentía y confianza”, dijo Oliver. “Kingsley pudo tomar una idea conceptual, lo cual puede ser desafiante para estudiantes de primaria, y logró que cobrara vida con imágenes visuales. Estoy tan orgullosa de su esfuerzo y admiro su ambición. ¡Estoy ansiosa de ver a Kingsley crecer como artista!”. 

Oliver se siente muy agradecida por el premio de $3,000 que viene con el reconocimiento. Dice que es una bendición recibirlo en nombre de Hernandez para inspirar a todos sus estudiantes, quienes demuestran creatividad y motivación.  

“Quiero exponerlos a todo medio de arte y darles la mayor cantidad de experiencias de arte que sea posible”, dijo Oliver. “Por lo tanto, estos fondos probablemente se utilizarán para comprar materiales que son difíciles de obtener con un presupuesto estándar. Me gustaría enfocarme en la escultura, las artes de fibra y la fotografía. ¡Estos estudiantes están listos para eso y no puedo esperar compartir materiales nuevos con ellos!”.

El director de Bonham Academy, David Nungaray dice que el arte tiene una función crucial en cualquier entorno, pero es aún más importante durante la pandemia que los estudiantes se expresen. Y su comunidad en sí es artística.

"Bonham tiene una larga tradición de apoyar las artes", dijo Nungaray. "Nuestros programas fueron desarrollados con asociaciones sólidas entre maestros, familias, estudiantes y nuestra comunidad. El que Kingsley gane este premio es evidencia de los años de dedicación que nuestra comunidad ha tenido con las artes, y de la creencia de que todos los niños necesitan tener estos tipos de experiencias. Nuestra escuela está ubicada en el distrito de arte. También es un reconocimiento para las familias que apoyan estos empeños y los maestros que apoyan el desarrollo artístico de nuestros estudiantes".

Hernandez está emocionado de representar a su escuela que a él le encanta. Dice que quiere mostrarles a todos lo “genial” que es Bonham. Continuará su pasión por el arte, ya sea que haya premios o no.

“Aprendí que puedes dibujar cosas basadas en tu vida y lo que está en tu imaginación”, dijo él.
