A dozen buses have joined San Antonio ISD's fleet that are designed with technology to keep students and drivers safer on the road. 

News reports are calling these new buses “school bus lifesavers” because of added technology that takes control of the bus and offers additional assistance to the driver in the event of danger. 

Think of newer model cars that offer similar features that improves how a vehicle handles in cases of bad weather, said the transportation department’s senior executive director, Nathan Graf. 

“Like many newer model cars, these buses come equipped with ‘Electronic Stability Control’ and ‘Collision Mitigation Technology,’” he said. “The Electronic Stability Control improves a vehicle’s stability to prevent skidding and maintain traction during events such as rain or impact collisions. This helps reduce the chance of the driver losing control of the vehicle. Collision Mitigation Technology is designed to prevent a collision or decrease severity by applying brakes in the few seconds before it occurs.” 

Graf said he and his department are very excited about the new buses to keep students, drivers and bus monitors safe during their travels to and from school. The buses were purchased through the assistance of a grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) with funds made available through Volkswagen State Environmental Mitigation Trust, informally known as the VW Grant. The technology is now standard on these types of International-brand buses, which are also propane and fit into the transportation department’s “greening” of the fleet. 

“Our guess is that other San Antonio districts will incorporate these into their fleet if they purchase the same make of bus,” Graf said. Currently, two other San Antonio-area school districts have employed the new buses: East Central ISD and Lackland ISD. 

The buses look no different than any other, except for the fact that they include a digital reader display for the driver on the dashboard, as well as a sensor in the front of the bus that monitors how close the bus is to other vehicles in front. Drivers will be trained on how the system will automatically kick in to assist them when driving. An example of this includes when a bus gets too close to a vehicle in front and is still moving, the brakes will automatically be applied. 

Graf’s transformation of his department has been dramatic since taking over four years ago. (He says it’s been the best four years of his career!) The addition of the new buses comes as the department has made nearly a dozen new changes, such as adding Wi-Fi to the buses in order to engage students during their commute to and from school. The connectivity allows students to read for enjoyment or get an early start on their homework. 

Next, Graf is looking at adding lane departure warning indicators that alert the driver if the bus leaves a lane without the turn signal on. Soon, Graf says 15 additional “school bus lifesavers” will be added to the fleet to bring the total number of these new, special buses to 27.

Los autobuses de San Antonio SAISD son más seguros gracias a nueva tecnología


Se han incorporado a la flota de San Antonio ISD una docena de autobuses que están diseñados con tecnología para mantener a los estudiantes y a los conductores más seguros durante los viajes. 

Los informes noticieros están llamando a estos nuevos autobuses “salvavidas de autobuses escolares” debido a la tecnología adicional que toma control del autobús y le ofrece ayuda adicional al conductor en caso de una emergencia. 

“Consideren los modelos de autos más nuevos que ofrecen funciones similares que mejoran cómo un vehículo se maneja en el mal clima”, dijo el director ejecutivo superior del departamento de transporte, Nathan Graf. 

“Como muchos modelos de auto más nuevos, estos autobuses vienen equipados con ‘Control de estabilidad electrónico’ y ‘Tecnología de amortiguación de impacto’”, dijo. “El Control de estabilidad electrónico mejora la estabilidad a fin de prevenir los derrapes y para mantener la tracción durante eventos como lluvia o colisiones con impacto. Esto ayuda a reducir la posibilidad de que el conductor pierda control del vehículo. La tecnología de amortiguación de impacto está diseñada para prevenir un choque o para disminuir la gravedad al aplicar los frenos en los segundos antes de que ocurra”. 

Graf dice que él y su departamento están muy emocionados en cuanto a los nuevos autobuses que ayudan a mantener a los estudiantes, conductores y monitores de autobús seguros durante sus viajes de ida y regreso a la escuela. Los autobuses se compraron por medio del subsidio de asistencia de la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental de Texas (TCEQ, por sus siglas en inglés) con fondos proporcionados a través de la Fundación de Mitigación Ambiental Estatal de Volkswagen, también conocido como el Subsidio VW. La tecnología ahora viene estándar en estos tipos de autobuses de marca internacional, que también utilizan propano y se ajustan a la meta ambiental de la flota. 

“Lo más probable es que otros distritos en San Antonio incorporarán estos autobuses a sus flotas si compran la misma marca de autobús”, dijo Graf. Actualmente, dos distritos más en el área de San Antonio están utilizando los autobuses nuevos: East Central ISD y Lackland ISD. 

Los autobuses lucen igual a los demás autobuses escolares, con la excepción de que cuentan con una pantalla digital en el tablero al igual que un sensor en la parte delantera del autobús que monitoriza qué tan cerca se encuentra el autobús a otros vehículos enfrente. Se capacitará a los conductores sobre cómo el sistema se activará para ayudarles al manejar. Un ejemplo de esto sería cuando un autobús está demasiado cerca de un vehículo en frente y aún está acelerando, se aplicarán automáticamente los frenos. 

La transformación que Graf ha llevado a cabo en su departamento ha sido drástica desde que tomó el mando hace cuatro años. (¡Dice que han sido los mejores cuatro años de su carrera!). La adición de los nuevos autobuses llega en un momento en el que el departamento ha hecho casi una docena de cambios nuevos, como agregar Wi-Fi a los autobuses a fin de captar la atención de los estudiantes durante sus viajes de ida y regreso a la escuela. La conexión les permite a los estudiantes leer o empezar su tarea temprano. 

Ahora, Graf está considerando agregar indicadores de advertencia de salida del carril que le avisa al conductor si el autobús sale del carril sin la señal direccional. Graf dice que se agregarán 15 “salvavidas de autobuses escolares” adicionales a la flota para aumentar el número total de estos nuevos autobuses especiales a 27.
