Travis ECHS senior chosen as SAC Distinguished Graduate

De HoyasKathaleen De Hoyos, senior at Travis Early College High School, has been selected as the Distinguished Graduate in Liberal Arts at San Antonio College. Each year, the academic programs at SAC recognize one outstanding graduate from each program to honor during commencement.

“You have laid the foundation for a better life for you, your family, and even those whom you encounter,” said San Antonio College President Robert Vela, in a letter to Kathaleen. “The entire San Antonio College community stands behind you in support as you continue on your path toward success.”

Kathaleen and the other SAC honorees receive special recognition at the commencement ceremony by wearing a cord to signify their status as well as have a special mark on their diplomas. Their names also are inscribed on department plaques at the conclusion of the academic year. SAC will hold an in-person commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 8, 2021.

While managing high school and college, Kathaleen completed many internships, designed various logos for companies, and developed a digital marketing business on social media to help other local businesses transition from in-person to a successful online presence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Kathaleen supported her mother by taking care of her brother and sister while her mother worked. As their older sister, she says she tried her best every day to be the highlight of her siblings’ day and to become a better version of herself for them.

Kathaleen has always been naturally determined to further her understanding of STEM and entrepreneurship to remedy the negative effects of AI technology and benefit society. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in science and technology management at a university in Texas.

This is the third year in a row that a Travis Early College High School student was named the SAC Distinguished Graduate in Liberal Arts.  Yasmin Banuelos earned the recognition in 2020, and Lauren Gonzalez earned the recognition in 2019.
