In celebration of National Poetry Month, Young Womens Leadership Academy - Primary is hosting local poets to talk to students during a special Guest Poet Series. This week, the all-girls primary school hosted San Antonio’s Poet Laureate Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson.
“Writing is one of the most powerful tools you can have,” said Sanderson. “People have a lot more respect for you when you have your education and can articulate yourself. Writing is a way to represent the best gifts you have inside yourself.”
Sanders is serving as the City of San Antonio's fifth Poet Laureate for a three-year term from 2020-2023. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Sanders’ work has reached audiences within San Antonio and beyond. In addition to preforming her original poem, Rosary Beads, she showed a variety of her work to the 125 students and teachers in attendance. Sanders, a prolific artist, not only writes poetry but also sings and produces a variety of visual art pieces.

“I want you to see yourself as an artist,” she told the student in attendance. “Sometimes we get really self-conscious. We compare ourselves to others and put yourself down. How is anyone going to believe in your arts unless you believe in it yourself? You can be great at something; it starts with believing in yourself.”
Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives.
The year 2021 marks the 25th anniversary of National Poetry Month.

Para celebrar el Mes Nacional de Poesía, Young Womens Leadership Academy - Primary está presentando a poetas locales para que hablen con los estudiantes durante una Serie de Poetas Invitados. Esta semana, la escuela primaria de niñas recibió a la Poeta Laureada Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson.

“Quiero que se vean como artistas”, les dijo a los estudiantes que asistieron. “A veces nos sentimos muy tímidos. Nos comparamos a otras personas o nos menospreciamos. ¿Cómo van a creer todos los demás en su arte a menos que ustedes crean en sí mismos? Pueden hacer algo genial; tienen que creer en ustedes mismos”.
El Mes Nacional de la Poesía, iniciado por la Academy of American Poets en abril de 1996, le recuerda al público que los poetas tienen una función integral en nuestra cultura y que la poesía es importante. A lo largo de los años, se ha convertido en la celebración más grande de alfabetización en el mundo, con miles de millones de lectores, estudiantes, maestros de K-12, bibliotecarios, vendedores de libros, comisarios de eventos literarios, editores, familias y claro, poetas, que destacan la importancia de la poesía en nuestras vidas.
El año 2021 marca el aniversario 25 del Mes Nacional de la Poesía.
