San Antonio ISD Young Womens’ Leadership Academy English teacher Michelle Grajeda has been selected as a recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award. The prestigious award is presented annually by Humanities Texas and recognizes the exemplary contributions of Humanities teachers across Texas schools.  

“I feel excited because the part of my teaching career that I really treasure, the creative part, is being recognized,” Grajeda said. “It is very exciting, and humbling of course, to have a particular honor like this that is specific to the arts.” 

Grajeda and Jennifer Delmer, AP government and AP U.S. history teacher, both began teaching at YWLA six years ago. Delmer said she has been bugging Grajeda to apply for this award, and finally, this year, she applied.  

“She is just so imaginative and creative, and I love the ways she teaches,” said Delmer. “What she does in the English classroom really enhances what my student are able to do in AP social studies and other classes. She just has created so many opportunities for our students that I had to get after her to apply for the Humanities Award, and this year, she finally did it. I wasn’t surprised that she won.” 

In addition to helping students find interconnected themes between multiple subjects, Grajeda is passionate about the idea of the individual voice and helping students create something of their own rather than having to conform to a preconceived notion. Her creative writing students and the Young Poets Society developed community-based, intergenerational programs, bringing retired poets into the classroom. And this year, Grajeda, alongside the YWLA administration, implemented a course called Women in Multicultural Literature.  

“Really, our role in that course is we gave space to the creations of women of color who perhaps have gone unheard,” she said. “And that has been a very compelling experience for both me and the students.” 

Grajeda will receive a check for $5,000, and YWLA will receive a check for $1,000 to invest in humanities programming and materials at the school.  

“It always feels like you are not doing enough, and there is so much more you could be doing,” Grajeda said. “But then, it's nice to hear that somebody feels you are doing more than enough and affirms you for that. It’s really nice.” 

Nominees for the Humanities Texas Outstanding Teaching Awards must be full-time teachers in Texas public or private schools. Nominees should be skillful and dedicated teachers who possess an expansive and profound knowledge of the humanities subject they teach as well as have a record of active involvement in community activities and professional organizations, particularly those that promote the humanities.  

Humanities Texas, founded in 1973 under the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a nonprofit, educational organization supported by federal and state appropriations, as well as by foundations, corporations, and individuals. The awards recognize exemplary K–12 humanities teachers.

Maestra de inglés gana premio estatal de humanidades

Michelle Grajeda, maestra de inglés en Young Womens Leadership Academy de San Antonio ISD, ha sido seleccionada como ganadora del premio 2021 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanieties Award [Docente sobresaliente de humanidades para 2021]. El premio prestigioso se presenta cada año por Humanities of Texas y reconoce las aportaciones ejemplares de maestros de humanidades en todas las escuelas de Texas.  

“Me siento emocionada porque parte de mi carrera de enseñanza que realmente valoro, la parte creativa, se está reconociendo”, dijo Grajeda. “Es muy emocionante, y claro conmovedor, recibir un honor particular como este que es específico a las artes”. 

Tanto Grajeda como Jennifer Delmer, maestra de gobierno y de historia de los EE. UU. AP, comenzaron a enseñar en YWLA hace seis años. Delmer indica que le ha estado diciendo a Grajeda que solicitara para este premio, y este año por fin lo hizo.  

“Es tan imaginativa y creativa, y me encanta la forma en la que enseña”, dijo Delmer. “Lo que hace en el salón de inglés realmente realza lo que mis estudiantes pueden hacer en estudios sociales AP y en otras clases. Ha creado tantas oportunidades para nuestros estudiantes que tuve que convencerla que se postulara para el Premio de Humanidades, y este año, por fin lo hizo. No me sorprendió que haya ganado”. 

Además de ayudar a los estudiantes a encontrar temas interrelacionados entre varias materias, a Grajeda le apasiona la idea de la voz individual y de ayudar a los estudiantes a crear algo que venga de ellos mismos en lugar de tener que ajustarse a una idea preconcebida. Sus estudiantes de escritura creativa y la Young Poets Society [Sociedad de poetas jóvenes] desarrollaron programas intergeneracionales basados en la comunidad que invitan a los poetas jubilados al salón. Y este año, Grajeda, junto con la administración de YWLA, implementaron un curso llamado Mujeres en la Literatura Multicultural.  

“En realidad, nuestra función en ese curso es crear un espacio para las creaciones de las mujeres de color quienes tal vez han pasado desapercibidas”, dijo ella. “Y esa ha sido una experiencia cautivadora para mí y para los estudiantes”. 

Grajeda recibirá un cheque de $5,000 y YWLA recibirá un cheque de $1,000 para invertir en la programación y los materiales de humanidades en la escuela.

“Siempre parece como si uno no estuviera haciendo lo suficiente, siempre hay tanto más por hacer”, dijo Grajeda. “Así que es lindo escuchar que alguien siente que estás haciendo más de lo suficiente y te lo afirma. Es muy lindo”. 

Las personas nominadas para el premio Outstanding Teaching of the Humanieties Award deben ser maestros de tiempo completo en escuelas públicas o privadas en Texas. Las personas nominadas deben ser maestros talentosos y dedicados que cuentan con un conocimiento extenso y profundo de la materia de humanidades que enseñan y deben tener un historial de participación en las actividades comunitarias y las organizaciones profesionales, en especial las que promueven las humanidades.

Humanities Texas, que se fundó en 1973 bajo el Fondo Nacional para las Humanidades, es una organización educativa sin fines de lucro respaldada por dotaciones federales y estatales, al igual que por fundaciones, corporaciones y personas individuales. Los premios reconocen a maestros ejemplares de las humanidades de K-12.
