It is a record-breaking year at San Antonio ISD as students have been awarded about $128.8 million in scholarship award offers to date.
“The number of kids applying for scholarships is up, as well as the amount of money they are getting,” said Eduardo Sesatty, director of Postsecondary Initiatives at SAISD. “It’s not the same top 10 percent of kids getting more money; we have more students across the board getting these offers.”
In the 2019-2020 school year, SAISD students received $99 million in scholarship offers, compared to $66 million in the 2018-2019 school year. Over the past four years, college bound advisors (CBA), who are currently funded by the five-year, $8.4 million Pipeline for College Success grant from the Valero Energy Foundation through the SAISD Foundation, played a crucial role in helping students obtain scholarship offers.
Leading the District in scholarship offerings was Burbank High School, whose students received more than $40 million. Burbank CBAs Arturo Martinez and Sheryl Lew led the charge, collaborating with the entire school community to help encourage students to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), complete scholarship applications, and apply to colleges and universities.
“Here is our Top 10, and over here, we have our Million Dollar Club!” Lew said as she proudly pointed to a display featuring photos of smiling students during a recent tour of Burbank’s College and Career Hub. “We have 10 students who earned over a million dollars in scholarship offers, and our valedictorian earned over $2 million! This is a very special group of students; we have known them for four years now and they are just so great. They are so motivated, and they take a lot of initiative to do things.”
Martinez said that sometimes SAT and ACT test scores, or lack of scores, hold students back from applying to college. But because of the COVID pandemic, SAT and ACT scores were not required this year for college applications.
“We told students if you have a dream school – apply!” said Martinez. “And because the District has a National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) waiver, many students didn’t have to pay any application fees.”
In addition to having individual Zoom conversations with students about colleges and scholarships, Martinez and Lew presented to classes, connected with parents and coaches, and had themed incentives every month to get students excited about the process.
“Our teachers are really amazing; everyone is so supportive,” said Lew. “We presented to classes every month and that way, we got to reach every single senior, whether they were on campus or learning virtually.”
Ashley Cash, CBA at Young Women’s Leadership Academy, said that she thinks the CBA role at any campus is crucial to making sure students are aware of scholarship opportunities as well as helping the students take advantage of the offerings.
“When a student gets a scholarship, in addition to the financial impact, there is a psychological impact as well,” said Cash. “These scholarships show our students that other people, colleges, institutions see their potential and are invested in them. It helps keep them motivated as they work to get those awards. It helps meet both an immediate need for helping them pay for college so they are not taking on significant loans and making them feel like, ‘Yes, I got a crew behind me, I can go do this. These people believe in me.’”
Burbank Class of 2021 graduate Katrina Ramirez dreamed of attending college out of state, but didn’t think she could afford it. With the help of her CBAs, she will be attending NYU in the fall to study engineering.
“When I got the acceptance from NYU, I didn’t think I could afford it and figured I would just go to UT Austin,” said Ramirez. “I didn’t know what the NYU financial award letter meant so I gave it to Mr. Martinez, and he told me it was really good. I didn’t expect it at all. My tuition is basically paid for.”
Martinez and Lew are excited for all of their students’ successes and are pumped to try and top $50 million in scholarship offers in the 2021-2022 school year.
“I’m just going to say it, I want to go out with a bang in this last year of the Valero grant,” said Martinez. “These scholarships give our students more options and more negotiation power. And even though these scholarships are great, to us, they don’t equal success. Enrollment in college is success. This what I love that our District - we help our students every step of the way, high school and beyond!”

$128.8 millones en ofertas de becas para estudiantes

Este es un grupo de estudiantes muy especial, los conocemos desde hace cuatro años y son geniales. Están motivados y tienen mucha iniciativa para hacer las cosas”.
Martinez dijo que a veces las puntuaciones de los exámenes SAT y ACT, o la falta de esas puntuaciones, impiden que los estudiantes soliciten para el ingreso a la universidad. Pero debido a la pandemia de COVID, las puntuaciones de SAT y ACT no fueron necesarias este año para las solicitudes universitarias.
“Les dijimos a los estudiantes que si tenían una escuela de sus sueños – ¡debían solicitar!”, dijo Martinez. “Y ya que el Distrito tiene una exención por parte de la National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), muchos estudiantes no tuvieron que pagar cuotas de solicitud”.
Además de tener conversaciones individuales con los estudiantes por Zoom sobre las universidades y las becas, Martinez y Lew realizaron presentaciones frente a las clases, conectaron con padres y entrenadores, y tuvieron incentivos con un tema cada mes para motivar a los estudiantes en cuanto al proceso.
“Nuestros maestros son realmente increíbles; todos son tan alentadores”, dijo Lew. “Presentamos frente a las clases cada mes y de esa forma pudimos estar en contacto con cada estudiante de último año, ya sea que estuvieran en la escuela o aprendiendo a distancia”.
Ashley Cash, CBA en Young Women’s Leadership Academy, dijo que ella considera que la función de CBA en cualquier escuela es vital para asegurar que los estudiantes estén al tanto de las oportunidades de becas al igual que para ayudar a los estudiantes a aprovechar las ofertas.
“Cuando un estudiante recibe una beca, además del impacto financiero, también hay un impacto psicológico”, dijo Cash. “Estas becas les demuestran a nuestros estudiantes que otras personas, universidades e instituciones ven su potencial y han invertido en ellos. Los ayuda a permanecer motivados a medida que trabajan para obtener esos premios. Ayuda a satisfacer una necesidad inmediata para ayudarles a pagar la universidad para que no tengan que sacar préstamos grandes y para que puedan sentir: ‘Sí, tengo mucho apoyo, puedo hacerlo. Estas personas creen en mí’”.
Katrina Ramirez, graduada de la Clase de Burbank de 2021, soñaba en asistir a la universidad fuera del estado, pero consideraba que estaba fuera de su alcance. Con la ayuda de sus CBAs, ella asistirá a NYU en el otoño para estudiar ingeniería.
“Cuando recibí la aceptación de NYU, no creía que lo podría pagar y pensaba que mejor iría a UT Austin”, dijo Ramirez. “No sabía lo que significaba la carta de aprobación financiera de NYU así que se la di al Sr. Martinez, y él me dijo que era muy bueno. No me lo esperaba para nada. Básicamente está pagada mi matrícula”.
Martinez y Lew están encantados por el éxito de todos sus estudiantes y están emocionados de intentar pasar los $50 millones en ofertas de becas durante el año escolar 2021-2022.
“Quiero terminar este último año con la subvención de Valero en grande”, dijo Martinez. “Estas becas les dan a nuestros estudiantes más opciones y más poder para negociar. Y a pesar de que estas becas son geniales, para nosotros no equivalen al éxito. La matriculación en la universidad es un éxito. Es lo que me encanta sobre nuestro Distrito, ¡ayudamos a nuestros estudiantes durante cada paso del camino, en la preparatoria y más allá!”.
