Statewide winner for safety at San Antonio ISD
07/01/2021

roy2021San Antonio ISD safety specialist Roy Laughlin received statewide recognition June 30 by the Texas School Safety Center during a virtual ceremony. He was awarded the School Safety Spotlight Overall Statewide Staff Development and Training Award for his work with the SAISD Transportation Department’s safety protocols for employees. The School Safety Spotlight award program is designed to recognize and promote schools, districts, and individuals that foster education and learning through safe and secure campuses.

“I enjoy safety training because this is training that you receive at work and it also transfers to your life,” said Laughlin. “You take the information home and take it to other jobs and keep the information forever. Safety never leaves you. I also enjoy when someone comes up to you and says that what they learned in the training really became a part of their life lesson.”

Laughlin was selected as a monthly winner of the safety award in February. In June, he was chosen from all of the monthly selectees as the statewide winner in the Staff Development and Training category. According to Nathan Graf, senior executive director of the SAISD Transportation Department, this is the first time any individual SAISD employee has received this award.

“Roy is very dedicated to his job and has a great working relationship with drivers and staff in Transportation Services,” said Graf. “He takes a personal approach in responding to every incident and always put safety at the forefront. Roy has played an instrumental role in the safety of Transportation and is always available to offer insight into how to create a safer environment.”

Laughlin oversees safety and risk management programs for SAISD’s 260 school buses and 250 white fleet vehicles. Under Laughlin's leadership, SAISD has experienced a steady and notable decrease in the number of school bus and fleet accidents. He uses previous year accident data for comparative analysis to identify and isolate trends and then uses this data in monthly training sessions with employees to mitigate repeat accidents.

Additionally, Laughlin managed a school bus “Road-e-o” driving skills test, an event that enabled bus drivers to demonstrate their professionalism, skill, and dedication to pupil transportation in a fun and creative driving obstacle course. Laughlin, a believer in employee recognition, celebrated drivers through a beginning of the year ice cream social and the Transportation Department’s annual recognition ceremony of bus drivers with no accidents.
