"Work hard, be great, have heart" is the motto that teachers and students at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School model every single day. Now it's more than a motto. It's a mural. 

Art teacher Candice Saenz is a muralist who thought the blank walls at her school might be best suited for some big art. She wanted the art to instill even further their ‘have heart’ mantra. 

“That was our main inspiration,” Saenz said. “But an even bigger inspiration are the students and the neighborhood around us. There is so much potential here. We have to unlock it.” 

The mural is a floor-to-ceiling eagle – the school’s mascot – with the central focus of a heart that the eagle is grabbing onto. 

“The heart is the main part,” Saenz said. “That means it takes more than just coming to school every day. You have to care in order to make a difference.” 

And care she does. Saenz says she got the backing of her administration under Principal Marco Morales. J.T. Brackenridge is being renovated under Bonds 2016 and 2020, and with Saenz’s urging, Morales asked construction crews to leave the walls blank so his school community could paint them. 

Saenz began the mural during SAISD’s Jumpstart session, when students from across grade levels participated in a two-week program to get a ‘jump start’ on the year. Saenz enlisted the help of her students and finished the eagle in time for school to begin. 

“This is a muralist's dream,” Saenz said. “We used 10 gallons of paint, learned all about teamwork, and how to treat our creation with respect because they see how much work went into it.” 

A product of San Antonio’s west side herself, Saenz is proud of the work that she and her students accomplished. She knows how strong the cultural connection is on the west side where murals and art are very common. Through art, she wants to give back to her community and inspire her students to gain a greater sense of themselves. 

“I feel passionate about working with the students to bring art to the neighborhood,” she said. “You can reach high potential, and that’s exactly what we are doing here.”

El mural de una maestra inspira un gran corazón

 
"Esfuérzate, sé genial y ten corazón", es el lema que los maestros y estudiantes en J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School modelan todos los días. Ahora es más que un lema, es un mural. 

Candice Saenz, maestra de arte, es una muralista que consideró que las paredes en blanco en su escuela podrían ser ideales para el arte en grande. Ella quería que el arte inculcara aún más el mantra de ‘ten corazón’. 

“Esa fue nuestra inspiración principal”, dijo Saenz. “Pero una mayor inspiración son los estudiantes y el vecindario que nos rodea. Hay tanto potencial aquí. Tenemos que desatarlo”. 

El mural es un águila de piso a techo –la mascota de la escuela– con el enfoque central de un corazón que el águila está sujetando. 

“El corazón es la parte principal”, dijo Saenz. “Eso significa que se requiere más que solo venir a la escuela todos los días. Tienes que mostrar bondad para marcar una diferencia”. 

Y ella muestra bondad de sobra. Saenz dijo que recibió permiso de su administración dirigida por el Director Marco Morales. J.T. Brackenridge se está renovando bajo los Bonos 2016 y 2020, y a petición de Saenz, Morales les pidió a los equipos de construcción que dejaran las paredes en blanco para que su comunidad escolar las pudieran pintar.  

Saenz comenzó el mural durante la sesión de Jumpstart de SAISD, cuando los estudiantes de todos los niveles de grado participaron en un programa de dos semanas para tener un comienzo anticipado al año escolar. Saenz enlistó la ayuda de sus estudiantes y terminó el águila a tiempo para comenzar las clases. 

“Este es el sueño de todo muralista”, dijo Saenz. “Usamos 10 galones de pintura, aprendimos sobre el trabajo en equipo, y sobre cómo tratar nuestra creación con respeto porque ellos ven el trabajo que tomó”.

Saenz ha vivido en el lado oeste de San Antonio desde pequeña y está orgullosa del trabajo que ella y sus estudiantes lograron. Ella sabe lo fuerte que es la conexión cultural en el lado oeste donde los murales y el arte son muy comunes. Ella quiere servir a su comunidad e inspirar a sus estudiantes por medio del arte para que tengan un mejor sentido de quiénes son. 

“Me siento apasionada en cuanto a trabajar con los estudiantes para incorporar el arte en la vecindad”, dijo ella. “Puedes alcanzar un alto potencial, y eso es exactamente lo que estamos haciendo aquí”.
