Before the sun came up on the morning of Sept. 23, dozens of Jefferson High School students and faculty members gathered on the football field with tea light candles to make a powerful statement: the dark will turn into light.  

Senior Joseph Gonzalez organized the event, Jefferson into Light, as part of his International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme capstone project, to show support for those suffering from suicidal thoughts and anyone impacted by suicide.  

After gathering and distributing the lights, the group walked around the track together until dawn.  

“It’s symbolic of darkness in your life turning into light,” Gonzalez said. “I’m hoping this event showed people that there are people out here that are willing to support and that it’s okay to not be okay.” 

Los estudiantes brillan para apoyar la salud mental

Antes de que saliera el sol la mañana del 23 de sep., decenas de estudiantes y empleados de Jefferson se reunieron en el campo de fútbol con velitas para compartir un mensaje importante: la oscuridad se convertirá en luz. 

El estudiante de último año de preparatoria, Joseph Gonzalez, organizó el evento, Jefferson into Light, como parte de su proyecto CAS del Programa del Diploma IB, para mostrar apoyo a las personas que sufren de pensamientos suicidas y cualquier persona afectada por el suicidio. 

Después de reunirse y distribuir las velitas, el grupo caminó alrededor de la pista hasta el amanecer. 

“Simboliza la oscuridad en tu vida que se convierte en luz”, dijo Gonzalez. “Espero que este evento les haya mostrado a las personas que hay gente que está dispuesta a apoyarlas y que está bien no sentirse bien”.
