Even before his first day on the job as San Antonio ISD interim superintendent, Dr. Robert Jaklich spent time working in the district's downtown central office building – and even staying late – to hit the ground running. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, he officially started.
SAISD Trustees announced Dr. Jaklich as interim superintendent following the Sept. 20 Board meeting. He has a decade of experience leading other districts, most recently as superintendent of Victoria ISD, and prior to that, he led Harlandale ISD.
SAISD Board president Christina Martinez believes Dr. Jaklich’s experience is the right fit for SAISD.
“We believe Dr. Jaklich is the right person to continue leading this district forward,” she said. “He demonstrates the experience and wisdom to assess situations, resulting in sound decision-making,” said SAISD Board President Christina Martinez. “We are confident the district will continue to thrive under his leadership as the board plans to launch a search for a permanent replacement.”
On his first official day, Trustees hosted a time for Dr. Jaklich to meet with staff members and introduce himself.
“Most retired superintendents don’t come out of retirement,” he told the staff. “But this was just a wonderful opportunity, and I’m so excited about everything that’s going on here that I wanted to be a part of it.”
Dr. Jaklich said his focus is to ensure nothing gets in the way of the mission of helping teachers, students, and the families of SAISD.
“My responsibility is to support you in everything that you do – provide you resources, direction, opportunities, help remove obstacles – so we can support our campuses,” he said.
Dr. Jaklich has earned a reputation as being an exceptional leader and mentor to many, including Jeanine Nepveux of Harlandale ISD. He hired her as a high school counselor at Harlandale High School in 2000. She said she learned so much from him, especially his work ethic and how he interacts with people.
“You will never find anyone who works harder or cares more about his students, staff, and community than Dr. Jaklich,” she said. “He is always the first person to arrive at work and the last one to leave each day. He continuously inspires me to grow and to strive to be better professionally, even years after leaving HISD.”
The new interim superintendent hails from Wisconsin and is a huge basketball fan, according to Nepveux. He likes to be called “Dr. J,” a basketball reference to Julius Erving, a former influential professional basketball player.
Dr. Jaklich served as principal at Harlandale before being promoted to executive director of Human Resources, according to Nepveux. Later he would become that district’s superintendent. When he was still principal, Analisa Spicer was just beginning her tenure at Harlandale High School. Spicer is now with SAISD as a digital teacher librarian at Barkley-Ruiz Elementary School.
“He was a phenomenal leader,” Spicer said on social media. “I’m super excited to have him at SAISD.”
One of the qualities that makes Dr. Jaklich unlike others, Nepveux said, was that he makes every person feel like they are his favorite.
“He always takes the time to connect with everyone he encounters throughout the day,” she said. “Despite how busy his schedule may be, Dr. Jaklich always makes everyone feel like it is important to him to make time for them.”
Comments on SAISD social media pages echo those same remarks. His “fan club” at Harlandale, including Nepveux, believe that his impact there will be felt for years to come.
“San Antonio ISD made the best decision in naming him as their interim superintendent,” Nepveux said.

El Dr. Jaklich sirvió como director de Harlandale antes de ser ascendido a director ejecutivo de Recursos Humanos, explica Nepveux. Después llegaría a ser superintendente de ese distrito. Cuando aún era director, Analisa Spicer apenas empezaba a trabajar en Harlandale High School. Spicer ahora trabaja con SAISD y es una bibliotecaria digital en Barkley-Ruiz Elementary School.
“Él era un líder fenomenal”, comentó Spicer en las redes sociales. “Estoy súper emocionada de tenerlo en SAISD”.
Una de las cualidades que diferencia al Dr. Jaklich de los demás, dijo Nepveux, es que hace a todas las personas sentir como si fueran su persona preferida.

Los comentarios en las redes sociales de SAISD respaldan esas opiniones. Su “club de fans” en Harlandale, incluso Nepveux, sienten que su impacto allí perdurará por años.
“San Antonio ISD tomó la mejor decisión al nombrarlo superintendente interino”, dijo Nepveux.
