Perry Jackson can pinpoint a very specific origin to her passion for social studies: her third grade teacher.
“One of the things I remember most about her was her love of history and geography,” Jackson said. “She had a passion for teaching, and no matter how hard I try, I cannot remember a single negative thing about her.”
Jackson’s own students might say the same of her. Two decades later, Jackson, who teaches at Neal Elementary, is a San Antonio ISD Distinguished Teacher of the Year, now honored with the 2021 KENS 5 Credit Human EXCEL Award for SAISD. The award honors teachers’ innovative practices in the classroom and during remote learning last year.
"It’s especially an honor because I know how hard every single teacher was working last year to make sure students had positive outcomes,” Jackson said. “It makes it that much more special because everybody had to be innovative. Everyone deserves the applause.”
A native of Austin, Jackson has taught fourth grade for the last five years at Neal Elementary. Describing her entry into education as a “wild ride,” Jackson first thought about becoming a band director, and then worked as a nanny before settling back into elementary education.
“After talking to some friends and mentors, I realized that teaching would give me the opportunity to keep working with children but in a more meaningful way,” Jackson said.
She says she’s found plenty of that meaning in the classroom setting.
“My job is not just to teach. I am also at times a counselor, a shoulder to cry on, a recess buddy, a confidant, a student — the list goes on,” Jackson said.
Sharing that love of history and geography with her own third grade teacher, Jackson is now the self-proclaimed “Social Studies Nerd” on her campus, looking for activities to inspire her students in the core subject. She has led the Social Studies Committee in organizing Social Studies Day and has created mock elections to help students understand the democratic process.
“I always have maps up in my room to help students explore their curiosity,” Jackson said. “I have a lot of fun seeing all the students at Neal getting excited about history and culture.”
Seeing her students get excited is what keeps Jackson going, even in times like the COVID-19 pandemic, when the challenges are great.
“Seeing them get excited about something makes all the other stuff worth it,” Jackson said. “The moments when they take their purpose of learning as a chance to have fun. The days they say ‘I had so much fun today,’ I’m saying ‘They learned so much today.’ Those are the moments that keep you going.”
Jackson was one of three SAISD educators selected as Distinguished Teachers of the Year from a pool of campus-level Teachers of the Year, representing each district campus. The KENS 5 Credit Human EXCEL Award includes a trophy, $1,000 cash prize and a feature story aired on KENS 5.
