Subject Expert: SMART Spaces designed by smart students
Expert: Jennifer Emerson, Head of School, Briscoe International Baccalaureate World Elementary School
Ask a third through fifth grader at Briscoe International Baccalaureate World Elementary School about what makes a space ideal for learning and you'll hear about light, color, texture, and scale. The students might even take out their tape measure and sketch pad. Through a SMART Spaces initiative, students use and improve their math, reading, writing, and art skills while they learn about architecture and create learning spaces outside of their classrooms. The project is a good representation of the International Baccalaureate framework of learning, says Jennifer Emerson, Head of School at Briscoe. Student designers are called upon to be risk-takers and to do something they have never done before. Collaborators and mentors on the project include artists from SMART (Supporting Multiple Art Resources Together) and Alamo Architects.
Interviews for this story will be conducted in an outdoor learning environment.
