Subject Expert: Social media concerns today 

Expert: Dawn Kulpa, SAISD Director of Social, Emotional, and Academic Development (SEAD)

Dawn Kulpa is available to speak about the district’s social media toolkit for grades 6-12, including lessons about TikTok. The district’s strategy and lessons on social media has been noted by the Council of the Great City Schools, who has shared it with their mental health group and nationally with its member superintendents and chief academic/school officers. Kulpa can answer questions such as the following:

• What are some of the biggest concerns about the use of social media this year?
• What do you wish students knew about social media?
• What is SAISD doing to educate and support students with these challenges?
• How can parents support healthy social media use?
• What should students and family members do if they see a post that threatens school safety?

San Antonio ISD Dual Language, ESL and Migrant program will present Siempre Bilingüe, an annual parent summit on bilingual education, culturally sustaining teacher, and content-based language instruction. Dr. José Medina and Angela Valenzuela are keynote speakers; there also will be parent presentations.

SAISD is hosting a food distribution event in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank. All SAISD families are welcome. Distribution will take place on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last.

San Antonio ISD, in partnership with AccuReference, is providing COVID-19 mobile testing for the spring semester. SAISD staff, students, and families may participate in drive-up COVID-19 testing. Staff and students receive free PCR or rapid tests; family members receive free PCR or $30 rapid tests.

The SAISD Business Diversity Program is partnering with University Health and other organizations to host a class on Bonding as part of UH’s series from Sub to Prime. Drew Addison, partner and vice president of surety at IBTX, will explain what to look for in a surety company, what is the quick bond process, and how to increase your bonding capacity.

Feb. 2 (Wed) – Guest readers on World Read Aloud Day

San Antonio ISD and Valero leaders will join millions around the globe in celebrating the power of reading aloud on the 13th annual World Read Aloud Day. Kindergarteners and first graders will hear the animated voices of adults reading “Waiting for the Bibilioburro/Esparando el Biblioburro,” about a unique mobile library that journeys over mountains and through valleys to bring literacy and culture to rural Columbia. The event kicks off the Classroom Libraries Project and the Teacher Recognition Project, which is coordinated by The Leaders Readers Network and funded in part by Valero.

SAISD in collaboration with the Center of Advanced Wellness will provide full-service vaccinations for COVID-19 – including first and second doses, pediatric doses, and boosters – for eligible SAISD staff, students and family members. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants should bring their vaccine card for second doses and boosters.

San Antonio ISD is holding a job fair to recruit for the positions of custodians, construction helpers, painters, journeyperson electricians, journeyperson plumbers, journeyman HVACs, drivers, and warehouse workers.
