Subject Expert: Changes to USDA school meal nutrition standards  

Expert: Jenny Arredondo, Senior Executive Director for SAISD Child Nutrition Services

Next week, Jenny Arredondo is available to speak about today’s announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that the agency will implement new updates to school nutrition standards. These standards, set to be implemented in the next two school years, include updates to milk, whole grains and sodium requirements for school meals.

The SAISD Family and Community Engagement Office holds free, one-hour parent training workshops on various topics of interest. This session is on the topic of raising healthy eaters. Participants will enjoy interactive food demonstrations led by certified chefs and nutrition professionals, featuring delicious and budget-friendly recipes.

Feb. 8 (Tues) – Final SAISD Superintendent Search town hall

Parents, staff, students, and community members are invited to share their input on the traits they believe the next SAISD district leader should have by completing a survey at www.saisd.net/suptsearch and by attending the final town hall in SAISD’s series of meetings. The meeting is being held in-person at Highland High School and also online.

Feb. 9 (Wed) – SAISD bus driver job fair

San Antonio ISD is holding a job fair to recruit bus drivers. Starting pay is $16.75 an hour, with additional consideration for directly related experience. Signing incentives are $1,000 for those with a CDL license and $500 for those without a CDL license. Position comes with paid CDL training and opportunities to earn extra pay through field trips and supplemental work at the bus terminal.

Feb. 9 (Wed) – Bond 2020 Community Meeting: Burnet Project

The community is invited to discuss the planning and designs for a new school at Burnet Learning Center, which will serve as an extension of Bonham Academy. During the meeting, SAISD representatives and project architects will discuss the results of a community survey. SAISD’s $1.3 billion Bond 2020 allocates $30 million to a new school at the Burnet site for renovations or new construction. The building has not been fully renovated in more than 50 years and has 30-year-old infrastructure. The meeting is being held in person at Bonham Academy and online.
