Students in every discipline need practice to be prepared and professional in real-life scenarios. This week, Edison High school students will participate in a mock disaster drill to learn how to perform during a mass casualty event to save lives. Participating Edison students are part of the school’s Health Professions magnet and 1st Responder Academy.
Edison High School is informing its neighbors that during the training exercise, they may hear explosions and see a large presence of law enforcement and emergency personnel. Neighbors are asked not to panic and are invited to watch the training from a safe distance. Spectators will be allowed in the bleachers as long as they do not approach the field.
The mock disaster drill will involve a school bus and students will have the following roles:
• Edison law enforcement students will conduct an investigation and make an arrest. Note: At a later date, Fox Tech law students will try the case virtually from their campus in collaboration with Edison’s law enforcement program.
• Edison’s EMT and other health science students will treat and conduct triage of victims and take them to the appropriate transport vehicle, although no one will be transported off campus.
• Edison’s fire students will flow water to extinguish a mock fire. Fire students also will manage the helicopter landing zone and help extricate victims for treatment.
• Emergency personnel from Airlife, Acadian Ambulance, BCSO and SAFD will evaluate students’ performance and provide feedback.
