High school students showcase artwork during Loteria Night

When:
May 18 (Wed), 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Where:
CAST Med High School, 2601 Louis Bauer Drive, 78235

The San Antonio community is invited to enjoy a family-friendly celebration of art and culture, along with an opportunity to visit the CAST Med High School campus. On display will be an exhibition of student art including original paintings of Loteria cards and photography inspired by Earth Day.

The highlight of this event is a special preview of the campus’ latest large-scale collaborative project – a 12’x8’ mural created by a team of student artists and their art teacher, Kim Garza. Titled “Las Tres Mujeres,” the mural consists of three panels painted in acrylic. The portrait format is inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo and includes carved relief elements.

According to Garza, the mural tells a story of achievement and empowerment. Each panel of the mural has special meaning. The figures depicted are based on a mother representing the past and nature, a student representing the present and urban life, and an astronaut representing the future and space. The figures are connected by an anatomical heart, a recurring theme carried out during the school year via collaborative project-based learning.

“The work is meant to inspire the viewer to dream of a sustainable world where anything is possible so long as we work together to make it so,” said Garza.

Participants will enjoy traditional Loteria, prizes, concessions, and musical performances by the CAST Med mariachi group. The event is a collaboration between the campus’ Spanish, music and art departments.

A $5 entry donation benefits first CAST Med High School graduating class of 2023.
