Anthony named new athletic director at SAISD
06/23/2022
Fred AnthonyJune 23, 2022 – Fred Anthony has been named Senior Executive Director of Athletics at San Antonio ISD. He has worked as an educator for 27 years in Harlandale ISD. Anthony's first day in SAISD is July 11.

Anthony replaces Todd Howey, who will retire June 30 after 32 years of service in education, including the last seven years in SAISD.

“I am humbled and grateful to replace somebody like him (Howey),” said Anthony, a 1990 graduate of McCollum High School. “I am blessed. I know he (Howey) has done great things not only for SAISD but for Texas high school coaches. I am going to give it my best to continue that path of success at SAISD. Being the senior executive athletic director for a school district that represents the city of San Antonio is such an honor. I am extremely excited.”

Anthony has worked as a coach, teacher, and administrator in his education career, including the last nine years as principal at Harlandale High School. In 1998, he served as the head varsity baseball coach at McCollum where he guided his team to the school’s first-ever boys athletics state playoff win. The Cowboys beat Burbank for the Class 4A bi-district championship.

“I am a product of San Antonio. This is home,” Anthony said. “I have the same background as many of those in the SAISD community. I understand the needs and beliefs of the community, and I am proud to represent. Athletics changed my life. And I know athletics can help better the lives of many here in SAISD.”

In Anthony’s new role as Senior Executive Director of Athletics at SAISD, he will manage more than 5,000 student-athletes and 300-plus coaches. He will represent athletic programs at high school, middle school and academy levels.

“My goal is simple,” Anthony said. “I want to see our student-athletes become productive citizens in our community because of one of the things that they learn in our athletic programs. The goal would be to have them become better men and women because of the opportunities they have at SAISD.”

In Howey’s time in SAISD, he left his mark. He helped create the SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame from its early years and was part of multiple dedication ceremonies at sporting events that honored alumni.
“I will miss being surrounded by people that love San Antonio ISD and will do whatever they have to do to put kids first. No excuses, just hard work,” Howey said.
