Student Voices: Burbank Football athletes welcome Collins Garden Elementary students to school

Sept. 23 (Fri) – 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., Collins Garden Elementary School, 823 Gevers St., 78203
Burbank High School senior Matt Cortez and the rest of the Bulldogs football team are spending every Friday morning of the season at feeder campuses to meet and greet students to school. The student-athletes are waiting curbside, opening car doors as parents drop off their children. The players are also wearing their game day jerseys, which almost makes them seem like superheroes to the younger students. Burbank head football coach/Athletic Coordinator Wendell Harris and his staff are also on hand with the players at the feeder elementaries. This is a volunteer program that was started to encourage the athletes to maintain a balanced life that includes community service and to provide the younger students with role models living up to those same principles.
