Expert Voice: Shannon Cregg - Art Teacher Herff Elementary/Kelly Elementary
Shannon Cregg is a joint Art teacher for both Herff Elementary and Kelly Elementary. Together students from both campuses have been busy building an altar for the annual Muertos Fest held downtown. All students from kindergarten to fifth grade have been working on projects in their classes for the altar from papel picado, to sculpted food offerings. A small group of about 10 fourth and fifth graders have been staying after school to work on the altar for a couple of weeks, and the school also hosted a community workday last Saturday. They have been supported by Lowe's with material donations and teamed up with a local artist, David Medina, to collaborate on the altar construction. The final altar will be on display Oct. 29 and 30 at HemisFair Park. “Our primary theme is the monarch butterfly—a symbol that is commonly used in Día de los Muertos to represent the spirits of the departed returning as Monarchs migrate to Mexico around Día de los Muertos each year,” Cregg said. A beautiful analogy for a poignant time, a day when our loved ones who have passed on to the next life are remembered and honored.
