STUDENT VOICE: Nalaniya Wilson, Highlands High School senior
During Black History Month, Nalaniya can speak to what motivated her and fellow Highlands High School students to form the only Black Students Union (BSU) in the district.

Nalaniya Wilson is the top-ranked student in the Highlands High School Class of 2023. Wilson and her fellow Owls students wanted to build bridges between the cultures in the Highlands High School hallways. A result was the creation of the Highlands BSU. Wilson and the Highlands BSU have a busy February planned on campus. BSU members already have hosted a Black History Month Trivia Night. A campus-wide pep rally and a community Black History Month parade is still to come.

EXPERT VOICES: David Zamarripa, Fox Tech High School Mariachi Director, Alvin Martinez, Burbank High School Mariachi Director
San Antonio ISD is sending a record SIX high school Mariachi squads to the UIL State Festival February 24-25 in Seguin. These two Mariachi instructors can offer insight on building and maintaining a successful program.

Every year since the UIL has hosted a State Mariachi Festival, the Fox Tech “Mariachi Bonito-Tech Alitlan” has qualified for the biggest stage in Texas. Director David Zamarripa is a veteran at the mariachi student star-making game.

Meanwhile, down on the south side, the Burbank Bulldogs are making a return to State under the direction of Alvin Martinez. This is the first time in his three years at Burbank that Martinez has taken the “Mariachis Estrellas de Oro” to the big show. Martinez and his students play “El Ranchero,” an old song that didn’t have a mariachi arrangement until the Burbank Mariachi kids and their teacher wrote it themselves.

*Fox Tech and Burbank both perform Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center in Seguin, Texas. They are available for interviews during school hours.
