Stewart named Sam Houston High School football coach
Quincy Stewart has been named the head football coach at Sam Houston High School. For the past two years, he has served as the linebackers coach at Duncanville High School where the team advanced to the UIL Class 6A state championship game back-to-back seasons.
The Tyler native began his coaching career in 2009 and has worked at five different Texas high schools. He has one previous head coaching job experience at Venus ISD, located outside of Dallas. His overall record was 6-14 during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns.
Stewart inherits a Hurricanes team that has made the state playoffs 8 of the last 10 years. The team did not make the playoffs last fall, ending a streak of six straight seasons of making the postseason. Sam’s last playoff win came in 2010 when the team beat Hondo 18-13 in bi-district.
Stewart is married to Rhonda Thomas Stewart, a 1989 graduate of Sam Houston HS. They have four children.
“It’s a dream job. We’ve got to keep that winning tradition going,” Coach Stewart said. “My wife was at Sam Houston during the heyday when Coach (R.A.) Johnson was there. We need to let people know, we are still here. The pride is still there. The work ethic is still there. We just have to unlock it. Our goal is to not only go to the playoffs, but to excel in the playoffs. With the community, the school and coaching staff, I know we can get this done.”
Stewart was a star linebacker on his Tyler HS football team that won the Class 5A state championship in 1994. He played college football at Louisiana Tech University. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings between 2001-2005. He won a 2005 Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2005.
“We are beyond excited to bring Coach Quincy Stewart to Sam Houston High School,” said Todd Howey, SAISD senior executive director of Athletics. “He brings with him from Duncanville High School a proven athletic and academic plan for success. I do believe we hit a home-run with Coach Stewart.”
