EXPERT VOICE: Joann Chapa, Sarah King Elementary Crossing Guard
After nearly a half century on the job, Chapa can speak about her lifelong commitment and dedication to a school community.

May 30 (Tues) - Sarah King Elementary honors retiring crossing guard
9:30 a.m., Sarah King Elementary, 1001 Ceralvo St., 78207

Joann Chapa has been serving Sarah King Elementary for 47 years as the school crossing guard. Now the time has come for Chapa to lower the stop sign and walk that crosswalk for the last time, as she is set to retire at the end of the school year. Chapa has been an iconic member of the school community. The campus is planning to surprise her with a special ceremony that she believes is the annual School Safety Patrol Awards event. Students, staff and the community want to express their gratitude for Chapa's nearly half century on the job, walking the streets, day in and day out, rain or shine. Just to make sure all the students and families under her watch safely made their way to and from school.

The last day of school is this week on Thursday, June 1. Chapa is out on the streets early each morning at 7 a.m. Video footage can be gathered during the early drop off times or the afternoon pick up times. We will also have video footage of Chapa in action available to share.
