SAISD Foundation to hold drive to collect luggage and dorm room supplies for first-generation college students  
200 first-generation college students will receive dorm-life essentials to set them up for success in their first year away from home

The San Antonio ISD (SAISD) Foundation, in collaboration with Joe A. Gamez Law Firm, will host a Luggage and Dorm Room Supplies drive on Thursday, June 22 to support up to 200 of SAISD’s newest alumni who are headed off to college. Interested community members are asked to donate new or gently used luggage and new dorm room essentials. This is a drive-up event, and the community is invited to come anytime between 12:00-6:00 pm to the Alamo Convocation Center located at 110 Tuleta.  
 
“Our hope is that our students will know that their SAISD familia is behind them. Most are first-generation college students, and supporting their postsecondary journey is especially meaningful. I was a first-gen student, too. I remember what it was like” said Alumni & Community Engagement Manager Carrie Smith. 
 
New or gently used luggage or travel bags will be accepted. Donated items may also include bedding (XL twin) and towels, new pillows and blankets, pop-up laundry hampers or laundry bags and detergent, and shower caddies. 
 
These items will help set students up for success in their first year of college whether in town, in Texas, or across the country. We will send our students off with the gear they need for school. 
 
In addition to luggage and supplies, monetary donations are being accepted. The SAISD Foundation will purchase the needed items on a donor’s behalf. Donors may drop off monetary donations during the supply drive at the Alamo Convocation Center or donate online at https://www.saisdfoundation.com/donate/ by putting “Dorm Room Drive” in the comment section.  
 
A gift of $50 will fully support one student with a bed in a bag (twin XL sheets, comforter, pillow cover), a set of bath towels, a pop-up laundry hamper, detergent pods, and a shower caddy. 
 
Distribution of the items to SAISD’s college-bound students will take place at an in-person send-off on July 20, also at Alamo Convocation Center.
