July 29 (Sat) – 2023 State of Education Legislative Briefing, a citywide event
10 a.m. to Noon, Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive, 78212 

Raise Your Hand Texas and RootED, a non-profit organization that helps parents recognize ways of getting the most out of their children’s education, are hosts of a citywide State of Education Legislative Briefing. Local school district leaders and state lawmakers will discuss state laws impacting public education. Confirmed state legislators include State Senator Jose Menendez, Dist. 26; State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, Dist. 120; and State Rep. Steve Allison, Dist. 121. Topics will include school safety, teacher recruitment and retention, school funding and more.

Aug. 3 (Thurs) – SAISD Summer Intern Showcase
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., SAISD Central Office Board Room, 514 W. Quincy St., 78215

SAISD students who interned for the district this summer will share their experiences with Central Office staff. Students gained hands-on experience in areas such as accounts payable, communications, facilities, internal audit, IT, payroll and printing services. The event will conclude with networking opportunities for the students.

Aug. 4 (Fri) – SAISD Foundation New Teacher Shopping Days
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., H-E-B McCreless Market, Learning Zone, and Balcones Heights Target

The SAISD Foundation is supporting about 300 new teachers through a $100 shopping credit to purchase items they need for their new classrooms.
 
Aug. 4 (Fri) – “Meet the Teacher” events
3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Bowden Academy, 515 Willow St., 78202
4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Lamar Elementary School, 201 Parland Pl., 78209

The teacher-student relationship begins with the traditional “Meet the Teacher” event. This helps students, especially the younger ones, get familiarized with their surroundings and classroom before the school year begins. These two schools start the year on Tuesday, Aug. 8 – one week earlier than other schools in the district.

Aug 6. (Sun) – Herff Elementary annual Backpack Giveaway
Noon to 4 p.m., Herff Elementary School, 996 S. Hackberry St., 78210

In this annual Herff Giraffe tradition, students of the school will receive new backpacks full of school supplies to prepare them for the first day of school on Aug. 15.
