Unilever and H-E-B Celebrate San Antonio area schools’ recycling efforts on TEXAS RECYCLES DAY
11/15/2023

Nov. 15, 2023 – Supported by an in-store fundraising campaign and a donation from both Unilever and H-E-B, the SAISD Foundation awarded local elementary schools with grants up to $10,000 for needed projects as recognition for their students’ recycling efforts this past fall. This is the second year of this initiative. During Wednesday’s celebration, Unilever, H-E-B, SAISD Foundation and San Antonio ISD held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the beautification of SAISD’s Agnes Cotton Academy outdoor recreation area. The event gathered company leaders, elected officials, and leaders and representatives from SAISD and SAISD Foundation.

“The SAISD Foundation expands students’ experiences both inside and outside the classroom and is proud to partner on this initiative, which engages elementary students in learning about the importance of recycling, encourages them to include fellow students and their families, and motivates them to actively participate in Texas Recycles Day by recognizing their hard work with grant awards to their schools, said Judy Geelhoed, executive director of the SAISD Foundation.

“Now in its fourth year, the Everyday Unilever Does Good campaign has been focused on empowering local communities in need. This initiative is an example of our commitment in action showcasing the engagement of our local elementary schools in driving sustainability efforts in our Great State of Texas,” said Steve Kohring, Customer Development lead for Unilever.

Six winning elementary schools will be awarded grants by the SAISD Foundation for recreation, activity, or hands-on education projects on their campuses. This follows a district-wide effort this fall encouraging elementary schools to boost their recycling initiatives. In addition, Unilever, H-E-B, SAISD Foundation and the school community worked together on the ideation, design, and organization of resources to enhance the outdoor recreation area of Agnes Cotton Academy with new sports and play areas using recycled materials.

“At H-E-B we are constantly striving to create lasting impacts in the communities we serve. We are thrilled to serve alongside Unilever and friends at SAISD and the SAISD Foundation to promote sustainability practices in the lives of some of our youngest Texans and celebrate their amazing efforts on Texas Recycles Day.” Said Scott Mitchell, chief merchant at H-E-B.

Grants provided to the schools as well as the improvement and construction of the playground at Agnes Cotton Academy were funded through the partnership between Unilever and H-E-B. Both companies donated to the project and the donation was also supported by Unilever’s in-store fundraising campaign and H-E-B's Our Texas Our Future initiative. Unilever’s engagement is part of the company’s social purpose commitment, an initiative called Planet & Society. Through this commitment, Unilever is helping people and communities make sustainable living commonplace.
