More than a dozen cleaner, quieter electric school buses will roll out soon in San Antonio ISD, the first school district in Bexar County to add electric buses to its fleet.
SAISD recently has been awarded two grants that will bring 18 electric buses to the district. Fifteen buses will come as the result of the EPA Clean School Bus Program, provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. An additional three buses were granted through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
“We are excited to be part of the proactive push toward clean transportation, which especially is helpful to student riders, bus drivers, and school staff who may have asthma or other health conditions,” said Nathan Graf, senior executive director for transportation. “For all of them, and for our communities at large, we are phasing out diesel, and growing our fleet with cleaner options such as propane and electric.”
The first few grant-funded electric buses are expected to be added to the fleet in the fall, with the remaining electric buses arriving next spring.
