May 4 (Sat) – Highland Park “Final Chapter” event
11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Highland Park Elementary, 635 Rigsby Ave., 78210

Highland Park Elementary is inviting the community to take a walk down memory lane at their “Final Chapter” event. Highland Park alumni are invited to return to campus and join a “Walk of Honor” through the historic campus. Come share memories, take pictures and reminisce about the lessons learned and the bonds that were made in the school that was founded back in 1914.
 
May 6 (Mon) – SAISD Foundation Teacher Appreciation Week Surprise Grants
9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., ***Various schools – See schedule below***

The SAISD Foundation is kicking off Teacher Appreciation Week with a quartet of surprise grant awards. The “Surprise Patrol” will catch teachers in their classrooms to surprise them with grants they applied for that will enhance the student learning experience. Here is the schedule of surprise grants:
9 a.m., Washington Elementary, 1823 Nolan St., 78202 – (Book vending machine)
9:45 a.m., Hawthorne Academy, 115 W. Josephine St., 78212 – (STEAM library)
1 p.m., Hillcrest Elementary, 211 W. Malone Ave., 78214 – (Self-regulation room)
2 p.m., Briscoe Elementary, 2115 S. Flores St, 78204 – (Complex outdoor learning)
 
May 7 (Tues) – SAISD “Rising Stars” ceremony
6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive, 78212

SAISD honors the finest of the district’s first year teachers at the annual “Rising Stars” ceremony. 98 rookie teachers will be celebrated for making an impact in their fist year of teaching. Overall district wide “Rising Stars” will be named for elementary, middle schools and high schools.
 
May 8 (Wed) – Bowden Academy Bond 2020 ribbon cutting
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Bowden Academy, 515 Willow St., 78202

The SAISD Bond team and Bowden Academy invite the public to a ribbon cutting and open house celebrating the campus improvements made possible by the Bond 2020 program. Bowden Academy will be hosting their year end celebration with student projects on display throughout the campus. The community is invited to take a tour to see the school renovations and upgrades firsthand.
 
May 9 (Thurs) – Rogers College Prep Middle School “Do the Write Thing” award
9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Rogers College Prep Middle School, 314 Galway St., 78223

The “Do the Write Thing” challenge has given middle school students across the country a chance to write about how violence has impacted their lives and what solutions they feel can help their peers. The contest has been in Bexar County for about six years, where students submit essays with their thoughts and ideas. At this event, one Rogers College Prep Middle School student will be that they have been selected to serve as a “Do the Write Thing” ambassador for the city of San Antonio. The student, parents and teacher will be representing the San Antonio and SAISD at a conference in Washington, D.C. with all expenses paid.
 
May 9 (Thurs) – Bonham Academy Mexican American Studies celebration
11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St., 78205

Bonham Academy invites the community to join the campus in celebrating five years of Mexican American Studies at school and the district. A student showcase will feature projects and artwork Bonham Bear students have created over the school year.
 
May 9 (Thurs) – SAISD “Teacher of the Year” ceremony
6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive, 78212

Teachers that get invited to this event are “simply the best”. SAISD salutes the finest educators in the district at the annual “Teacher of the Year” ceremony. 98 campuses selected a Teacher of the Year, and all they will be celebrated for the learning they deliver to their students. In this gathering of the “Best of the Best”, SAISD will name overall “Teachers of the Year” for high schools, middle schools and elementaries.
 
May 11 (Sat) – Burbank High School Ag Farm Earth Day event
9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St., 78204

This is an event that was rescheduled due to weather. More than 75 volunteers will be at the Burbank High School Agricultural Science farm to work on various projects, such as making raised gardening beds for elementary schools.
 
May 11 (Sat) – Arnold Elementary “Painting in the Garden”
9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Arnold Elementary, 467 Freiling Drive, 78213

Arnold Elementary is inviting any eager artists to help paint a mural for the school garden with local artist Albert Gonzales. The day will be full of fun activities with food, music and local arts and craft vendors.
