Harris named new head football coach at Burbank High School
harris coachJuly 16, 2020 – Wendell Harris has been named head football coach and boys athletic coordinator at Burbank High School. This will be his first varsity football head coaching job.
Harris, who was hired as Burbank’s defensive football coordinator in 2018, was part of a Bulldog team that soared to back-to-back six-win seasons, which includes last fall’s thrilling come-from-behind win over Lanier 28-27 in the regular season finale at Alamo Stadium that propelled the team into the state playoffs.
“We hopefully will keep the wheels rolling,” said Harris, a graduate of San Marcos High School. “We have had great success and we are basically keeping the same formula with our staff and kids. We are not going to miss a beat. The plan is to go out and be competitive. With UIL realignment, we have a bunch of teams in our district that look like us. I think the district title is up for grabs. I think Burbank is going to compete and that’s our goal to get that title.”
Burbank will compete in District 13-5A-I. Other schools include Brackenridge, Edison, Highlands, Sam Houston, Jefferson, Lanier, Kennedy and Memorial.
Harris began his coaching career in 2012 and worked as a defensive line coach at Del Valle, Seguin, Brandeis and New Braunfels Canyon high schools.  He also worked as a middle school football coach in Del Valle ISD.
"I am very excited for Coach Harris to have this opportunity,” said SAISD Athletic Director Todd Howey. “He has played a major role in the turnaround of the Burbank football program and he is a perfect fit for moving forward. Not only will he continue to build on that success, he has a specific plan to advance the overall boy’s athletic program.”
