J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School is hosting “Deck It Out with J.T. Brack,” a collaborative initiative with Communities in Schools to distribute desks to the school’s students who are participating in remote learning. During the event, students also will receive school supplies and fun books to read.
On Friday, the first set of families who have put in a request for desks will have the opportunity to select and take home a slightly used student desk. The desks are from an outgoing inventory of furniture, which is being replaced as a result of SAISD’s Bond 2016. Some of the desks, but not all, may need refurbishing. If needed, families will receive refurbishing kits to include sandpaper, primer, and spray paint.
“We are hoping this event will help relieve some of the stress that our scholars and their families are experiencing as they navigate learning from their homes,” said J.T. Brackenridge Assistant Principal Cynthia Swanson.
Additional desks will be gifted to families prior to the Winter and Spring breaks, as new campus furniture continues to arrive. Although this first round of desk distributions focused on students learning remotely, the next two rounds will be open to both remote and in-person students.
