July 12, 2021 - The San Antonio ISD (SAISD) Foundation will host a Luggage and Dorm Room drive to support up to 100 of SAISD’s newest alumni, on Wednesday, July 14, from noon until 6 p.m, at Alamo Convocation Center, located at 110 Tuleta Drive. The SAISD Foundation is asking the community to help support the efforts by donating new or gently-used luggage and new dorm-room essentials.
“Our hope is that these first-generation college students will know that their community is behind them. Supporting their post-secondary journey is more critical than ever,” said Carrie Smith, SAISD Foundation’s alumni and community engagement manager.
“The SAISD Foundation is reaching out to the San Antonio community to help our newest alumni fulfill their dreams of heading off to college,” Smith continued. “We are offering them additional support in providing essentials every young person needs to live away from home, in a dorm, for the first time. Items like bedding and towels, pillows and blankets, and laundry hampers and detergent, will really set these students up for success in their first year of college. We will send our students off with the gear they need for school.”
Donations of new or like-new luggage or travel bags as well as dorm-room essentials will be accepted. Monetary donations also will be accepted, and the SAISD Foundation will purchase these items on the donor’s behalf. For instance, a gift of $100 will fully support one student with a bed in a bag, a set of bath towels, a pop-up laundry hamper, detergent, trash can, and a shower caddy.
Distribution of these items to new college-bound alumni will take place at an in-person send-off on July 22. At this event, new alumni will receive tacos, door prizes such as gas and HEB gift cards, a Foundation t-shirt, and all of their dorm room essentials.
About the SAISD Foundation: As a 501(c)3 public charity, the SAISD Foundation motivates the community to invest in teacher and student success, and in doing so, invests approximately $4 million dollars a year in classrooms, schools and district programs.
