Student Voice: Mental health and suicide awareness

Student: Joseph Gonzalez, senior and International Baccalaureate student at Jefferson High School

Jefferson High School senior Joseph Gonzalez organized a campus event, Jefferson Into Light, to bring attention to the importance of mental health and Suicide Awareness month. Gonzalez and several of his friends have dealt with suicidal thoughts. Through speaking about it, Gonzalez was able to help his friends by stressing that people care and are available to talk when these thoughts occur. Gonzalez turned his experience into a school project that ties into Jefferson’s International Baccalaureate Programme. He was able to complete a component of the IB curriculum through the event and project.
