The SAISD Board of Trustees and the Construction and Planning Department continue a series of community design meetings for various campuses approved for 2020 Bond improvement funds. The meetings, which run from 6–8: p.m., enable teachers, parents, students, and neighborhood organizations to share ideas for improving their schools. Architects and SAISD project managers will then incorporate suggestions into planning documents and designs, which will go before the Board of Trustees for approval in 2022.
Willie Burroughs, SAISD Chief Operations Officer, encourages the public to share their ideas and build a shared vision for the future and the improvement of our schools. He emphasized that improvements to SAISD programs will include serving early childhood, elementary, middle school, and high school students.
The meetings, hosted at SAISD high schools, will highlight plans for improvements for over 30 campuses in San Antonio. The meetings offer in-person and virtual options for attending. Breakout sessions will provide the latest plans for each individual campus.
Discussion topics include:
• New interior and exterior security systems
• Technology infrastructure, equipment, and components for high-speed connectivity in classrooms, science labs and other areas of the campus. Classroom audio systems, interactive smart boards, support tools and student devices.
• Overhaul or replacement of all classrooms, science labs, gyms, auditoriums, and student dining and kitchen areas
• Overhaul of historic original buildings
• Replace old exterior windows with new energy efficient windows in spaces receiving renovations
• Complete overhaul and update to mechanical systems to the latest energy efficiency and Indoor Air Quality standards
• New or replacement of outdoor learning opportunities
• Re-paving and re-surfacing parking lots and driveway
• Replacing and/or repairing existing playground equipment
• Exterior improvements and traffic studies to improve neighborhood congestion
“We’re off to a good start in planning improvements,” said Mr. Burroughs, adding “We hope that parents, teachers, and neighborhoods will let us know what they want and need to make our schools a national model for education and offer our entire SAISD family a chance to thrive and succeed in the future.”
