The first round of meeting by the numbers

students looking at a chartData from San Antonio ISD’s first round of Neighborhood Meetings regarding rightsizing shows a total attendance of 1,151 with an equal split between community members and employees.

The San Antonio ISD held a series of 14 neighborhood meetings from Aug. 17 – Sept. 12, 2023, to inform and gather feedback from the community and its own employees after it announce an initial Study of School Building Capacity. The study would look at the need and possible options for rightsizing within the district.

Data gathered from reservations and sign-in sheets show that of the total 1,151 who attended the neighborhood meetings 50% were community members, 39.5%were campus-based employees and 10.3% were district-based employees. Data looking at those who came from the community showed 58% were parents/parent representatives, 32.3% were community members, and 8.2% were business representatives.

The 14 neighborhood meetings were held equally across San Antonio ISD’s seven districts at the following campuses: Highlands High School, Burbank High School, Edison High School, Jefferson High School, Sam Houston High School, Lanier High School, Brackenridge High School, Irving Dual Language Academy, Young Men’s Leadership Academy, Harris Middle School, Longfellow Middle School, Hawthorne Academy, Twain Dual Language Academy, and Rogers Middle School.

The Sam Houston site drew the largest attendance with 137 people. Young Men’s Leadership Academy was second with 125 and Longfellow Middle School was third with 108 in attendance.

Initial recommendations for rightsizing within the district were heard at the regularly scheduled board meeting held Monday night and a second round of neighborhood meetings will begin. 

More than 14 meetings are schedule for the second round. The first meeting will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Lowell Middle School, 919 W. Thompson.
