GARDEN-BASED EDUCATION

Developing gardens on school campuses while integrating the gardens into academic curriculum and learning about an organic nutritional food source for meals has numerous benefits for students. These benefits include increased academic achievement, improved physical health, and improved social and emotional health. Students who have school garden programs scored significantly higher on the Texas science achievement tests as compared to students who were taught using traditional classroom-based methods (Klemmer, Waliczek, & Zajicek, 2005).  Research has shown that students who grow their own food tend to eat more fruits and vegetables (Bell & Dymont, 2008) and trend toward eating healthier through adulthood (Morris & Zidenberg-Cherr, 2002). Additionally, students engaged in a one-year school garden program had increased self-understanding and cooperative skills (Robinson & Zajicek, 2005).

In spring 2021, the SAISD Foundation, SAISD Science and Ed Tech Departments partnered with H-E-B to make hydroponics equipment (grow walls) available in 12 high schools and 17 classrooms. Interested teachers received grow walls and training focused on bringing science of plants to life as well as adding to academic culinary experiences. Due to the high interest and student engagement, the SAISD Foundation purchased an additional 16 grow walls for the spring cohort which Science and Ed Tech launched in February 2022 which included middle and elementary schools.
