Celebrating an attitude of excellence - Nov. 5, 2021
11/05/2021
Dear SAISD Family Member,

Each and every day we work extremely hard to accomplish the mission of our school district – To transform SAISD into a national model urban school district where every child graduates and is educated so that he or she is prepared to be a contributing member of the community.

As I visit the campuses and departments across our 79 square miles of excellence, I am always amazed by the passion, commitment, and dedication that you display to our students and toward each other. When describing the power of SAISD, I am reminded of the words of Krish Dhanam, “The message is clear: Plan with an attitude, prepare with aptitude, participate with servitude, receive with gratitude, and this should be enough to separate you from the multitudes.”

We have much to celebrate this week, and we are especially proud to showcase some of the latest accomplishments and achievements. It is clearly evident that we are surrounded by exceptional students, outstanding employees, supportive parents, a visionary Board of Trustees, and a culture that values the importance of education for all students.

Listed below for your review are just a few of the magical moments that we are celebrating in this week’s letter and that have made my heart swell with pride:

•    Fourth grade students at Maverick Elementary are about to be published in The New York Times. They zoomed this week with the editor to learn how to write an opinion piece. On Nov. 28, the students’ words will appear beside their photographs in The New York Times for Kids, a print section of the newspaper that appears in all subscriber and newsstand copies (more than 1 million) on the last Sunday of each month.

•    Student Council students at Poe Middle School are leading the way as the first school in Texas to participate in the national “Renew our Schools” energy competition. Students have been earning points since Oct. 4 by promoting awareness and saving energy at their school. The final results will be revealed on Nov. 12, and Poe is currently first place in the national competition.

•    Thirteen of our students won a spot in the All-Region Mariachi Ensemble. This is definitely a major accomplishment. Our SAISD students make up 54.7% of the entire ensemble. Eight of our students advanced to the area competition and will audition for a spot in the All-State Mariachi Ensemble.

•    This year, for the first time, the U.S. News & World Report ranked elementary and middle schools, and some of our schools made the list. Twain Dual Language Academy qualified as a U.S. News Best Elementary School and both Young Men’s Leadership Academy and Young Women’s Leadership Academy ranked among the U.S. News Best Middle Schools. They join other SAISD schools in the traditional high school rankings: Young Women’s Leadership Academy, Travis Early College High School, Advanced Learning Academy, and Fox Tech High School.

•    This year was the second time that Young Women’s Leadership Academy was named a National Blue Ribbon School. YWLA first earned recognition in 2015. Few schools earn this distinction once, and an SAISD school earned it twice! As a 2021 recipient, YWLA is the only school in Bexar County to receive this honor. The campus is among 26 schools throughout Texas and 325 schools in the country to be recognized. This recognition places YWLA in the top one-half of one percent of all schools in the United States.

John Ruskin once stated, “The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it but what they become by it.”

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire SAISD, thank you for holding true to our commitment in providing all students with a future of hope and endless possibilities. Each day you serve as a guiding force for an exemplary education, and we are so proud of your efforts to inspire us to become the school district that we aspire to be.

Have a “Fantastic Friday” and a “Wonderful Weekend.”
