Defining moments - Nov. 5, 2021
11/05/2021
Dear SAISD Family Member,

Each and every day, we are faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as difficult situations. We identify these opportunities as defining moments. The insight gained from embracing these moments provides us with the knowledge and expertise to make the right decisions and positively move forward as a school district.

Today’s recent events related to alleged threats at Burbank and Brackenridge high schools definitely fall into the category of defining moments. Over the past 24 hours, our Brackenridge and Burbank campuses have been bombarded with non-credible social media threats against their communities. We want you to know that the person who originated these messages has been identified and is in custody.

Sadly, we must inform you that the individual is an SAISD student. The student is cooperating with the FBI, and we can confirm that there was no intention to carry out any of the alleged threats.

We want to thank the FBI and all local law enforcement agencies, including our own SAISD Police Department, in their diligence to thoroughly investigate each threat and apprehend the individual so quickly. It is important to note that immediately upon learning of the possible threats to our schools, the school district and law enforcement agencies acted without delay to ascertain there was no credible threat. All of this was accomplished before the end of the school day.

This incident provided us with an example of how important it is for us as a school district, to continuously open the lines of communication with our parents, families, community, and each other. We believe that serving as a dependable source of accurate and timely information is essential if we are to be successful in this lightning-paced world of digital communications.

We are determined to take a measured and informed approach to developing our presence in social media and are committed to setting the example for our students by exemplifying responsible social media usage. We also want to reinforce that we will never jeopardize the safety of those in our care, and we will use all resources at our disposal to protect our SAISD family members.

It has been said that we should not limit our challenges, but instead challenge our limits. It is clearly evident that in SAISD we have the passion, the commitment, and the purpose to make a difference in the lives of our students, their families and in the lives of each other. We remain committed to making the safety and well-being of you and our students our number one priority and realize that we cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.

Have a wonderful weekend!
