Dear SAISD Family Member, 
 
In the San Antonio Independent School District, we join our nation in expressing our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and community of Oxford High School in Oakland County, just north of Detroit, Michigan. There are no words that can adequately describe this senseless and unfathomable event as we all try to grapple with this tragedy.
 
Our hearts break for each life cut short and the countless lives that have been forever altered because of yet another school shooting. This tragedy and the loss that follows are just inconceivable and heart wrenching. Let us bring our minds and hearts together to send strength and comfort to everyone affected by yesterday’s horrific events.
 
We know that in the aftermath of this type of incident, people often seek reassurance. Violence affects us all – no matter where it happens. It’s only natural that our reactions of the heart are accompanied by an instinctual reaction of heightened awareness, to guard and protect our own students and campus employees. 
 
As your Interim Superintendent of Schools, I want to assure you that SAISD takes all issues regarding school safety very seriously, and we will continue to pursue all necessary steps to ensure the security of our campuses as well as our central and satellite offices. Our District has strong safety and security measures in place, and our police and school administration remain vigilant.
 
Most importantly, if you see, hear, or know something – please say something. A key component to creating a safe environment is a strong culture of value and awareness, where students and staff feel they can openly report suspicious activity.
 
As we move forward in the upcoming weeks, we will continue to focus on achieving excellence for all while remaining sensitive to the concerns of all stakeholders.
