The courage to dream - Feb. 25, 2022
02/25/2022
Dear SAISD Family Member,

What an honor it is to serve this amazing school district with you. As I travel across our 79 square miles of excellence, I am constantly reminded that the power of SAISD continues to be reflected in the power of our people. Your focus on every child, every classroom, every day, allows us to support every teacher as a leader and every student as a success.

An excellent example of every teacher as a leader can be found in Ninette Ligarde’s fifth-grade Bilingual classroom at Herff Elementary School. Ninette does not just focus on the destination of learning; she is also committed to making this journey fun and exciting for every student she instructs.

On Thursday, Ms. Ligarde was surprised by H-E-B, Principal Kelly Allen, Herff staff, and SAISD central office staff, with the announcement that she is a regional finalist for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Elementary level in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, placing her among the most outstanding elementary school teachers in the State of Texas.

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Ligarde on receiving this extremely prestigious honor. We are so proud of her efforts to serve as a difference maker in the lives of our students and for reminding us that “teachers inspire even the smallest of hearts to grow big enough to change the world.”

With spring break approaching soon, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the amazing initiatives our “leaders of change” are implementing across our outstanding school district. We believe leadership is about change, support, high expectations, and relationship building. It is also about taking charge and seeing things not as they are but how they should be.

During this month, our campuses and departments have been celebrating Black History Month, and I’d like to share two projects with you. The Transportation Department observed Black History Month this week with a pop-up museum. At the Transportation facility, bus drivers created an exhibit with photographs and biographies of 15 Black leaders – 10 leaders for whom SAISD has named schools and five leaders related to transportation. At Cameron Elementary School, Network Principal Sonya Mora created a Periodic Table of Black History, a long-time goal of hers, which will remain in place for the remainder of this school year. Today, Cameron students are using the QR codes on the periodic table to learn about Black leaders as part of their Living History Museum project. It has been incredible to see inspiring projects such as these implemented throughout the entire SAISD.

Jackie Robinson once stated, “A life isn’t significant except for its impact on other lives.” Mr. Robinson must have had our SAISD family members in mind when he made this statement. On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire school district, thank you for your courage to dream big and for choosing to make the impossible possible.

We truly appreciate you and all that you do!

Have a “Fantastic Friday” and a “Wonderful Weekend.”
