Mask mandate update - March 22, 2022
03/22/2022
Dear SAISD Family Member,

Last evening at our regularly scheduled Board meeting, the SAISD Board of Trustees made the decision to lift the district’s mask mandate, changing our mask protocols from “required” to “encouraged.”

The following statement was the motion approved by the Board of Trustees to lift the district’s mask mandate:

“The COVID-19 positivity rate in SAISD continues to decrease significantly. To date, CDC's community level classification for Bexar County is currently ‘low’ and Metro Health has also designated the current risk level as ‘low.’ In acknowledgement of these findings, I move to rescind the mask mandate currently in place effective immediately and encourage the continued use of masks by all staff, students, and visitors throughout all of our schools and facilities and authorize the Superintendent of Schools, to monitor and adjust the mask wearing mandate based on criteria established by the Superintendent of Schools with guidance from the local public health authority.”

Therefore, beginning today, March 22, all staff, students, and visitors throughout our schools and facilities will be “encouraged” to wear masks until further notice. If at any time these conditions change, we will revisit this decision.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have based all of our decisions on science and local health data to implement our safety protocols. Currently, we are experiencing significant improvement in our local health statistics, and this is why the decision to move our mask protocols from “required” to “encouraged” was made. We truly appreciate everyone who participated in the mask mandate survey and want you to know how much we value your opinion and your feedback.

Both CDC and Metro Health have individually classified our community risk level as “low,” which is the lowest rating available for either agency. Furthermore, within SAISD, our positivity rate fell to less than one half percent – 0.38% – since returning from Spring Break.

In addition to continuing to encourage the wearing of masks, we will continue to provide mask supplies for those who request them. Furthermore, we will continue to offer COVID-19 vaccination clinics and weekly testing, and we remain committed to our sanitation and air purification protocols. The health and safety of our SAISD Family will always remain our number one focus.

Eleanor Roosevelt once stated, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” On behalf of our Board of Trustees and our entire 79 Square Miles of Excellence, thank you for all that you do to support the possibility to dream big and have the courage to make those dreams come true.

We truly appreciate you and all that you do.

Sincerely,

"Dr. J"
