I am home - May 2, 2022
05/02/2022
To All SAISD Staff:

You are my home. I have begun to immerse myself in this community and your sense of familia resonates with me. I am immensely inspired by your stories, your hopes, and your optimism. In you and in our students, I see my own sense of self. Similar to many of our students, I too am an English learner, and I was drawn to SAISD because of its embrace of dual language.

Our global society needs our students. Bilingualism, and even more so, multilingualism, are assets to our collective humanity. Our students will be stronger and more competitive because of their literacy in multiple languages. Their life journeys will show America and the world the beauty and strength that lies within a diverse community like San Antonio.

As a young adult, I was an immigrant to the United States. With my mother’s blessing, I traveled to New York City from the Dominican Republic to become a bilingual elementary school teacher. And my heart has not left the classroom since.

I am fiercely protective of the right of every child to a strong education. And I see that relentless drive in you, too. Because of you, this is a district on the rise.

If there is one thing to know about me, please know this: I am not here to lead; I am here to serve. I don’t believe in the theory of a superhero as a lone figure who’s going to come and transform a district or a school. This is really going to take a village.

I will work tirelessly beside you to continue to improve student academic achievement, enrollment, and attendance. Side by side, we will build upon the progress you already have made. We will work on a long-term vision that includes interventions and safety nets to catch students when they need help the most. And this vision will support our teachers, principals, and parents along the way.

My first goal is to start a listening tour throughout SAISD and the San Antonio community to hear from as many of you as I possibly can. I recognize that the pandemic has wreaked havoc on the public education system and the physical and mental health of our staff and families. But now is our opportunity to change education based on the lessons we’ve learned during the past two years. This is the moment that we’re all called to gather our strength and step up.

I am deeply honored and humbled to be serving you in SAISD, and I look forward to learning from you.

In service to the SAISD familia,
Jaime
