On this last day of school - June 2, 2022
06/02/2022
To All SAISD Staff:

Today is the last day of school, and while it is a time for celebration, it also is a time to reflect. Just last week, our neighboring school district in Uvalde experienced tremendous trauma and loss – deep wounds that time cannot heal. We in SAISD join the greater education community and the nation in mourning with our Uvalde colleagues and families during this incomprehensible and heart-rending time. They, too, deserved a celebratory end to their school year, and we continue to lift them up.

As we send strength and comfort to Uvalde, know that we support all of you and are committed to your security. Our police force is here to safeguard you and our students, and we are completely committed to protecting you while you serve our community’s children.

Each of us was affected by the tragedy, and it is important that we have the time and space to deal with the grief. I wish each of you a restorative summer during which you attend to your own well-being. Taking the time for our own mental health will make us even stronger when we come back for our students, whether for summer school or in August for back to school. Our children need us!

In these next few days, we will focus on our seniors as they prepare to pursue their life journeys. Yesterday I attended the first of our graduation ceremonies. I love that so far, each ceremony is unique, and from them, I am learning the personality of each high school. These ceremonies are a great introduction to this amazing district and all that we can accomplish together.

As I gazed at the proud faces of our newest alumni, I envisioned the many people who encouraged them along the way. In each, I could see reflections of their parents, their families and friends, and most of all, the educators, who had significant impact and brought them to this moment.

Seeing and hearing our seniors’ successes made me so grateful to you. You, too, make me proud. I see each and every one of you as valuable members of our SAISD family. I am grateful for your hard work and dedication in the face of so many unknowns brought on by a prolonged pandemic. Thank you for rising up and overcoming these challenges with incredible talent, knowledge, and grace.

For now, enjoy your summer break. May it be restful and just what you need.

In service to the SAISD Familia,
Jaime
