Celebrating a career of service - June 27, 2022
06/27/2022

To All SAISD Staff:

Police Chief Joe CurielA man who has touched my heart with his great sense of humanity announced his retirement this morning in front of the many honorable officers in the San Antonio ISD Police Department. SAISD Police Chief Joe Curiel gave almost 50 years of service wearing a uniform, and his gift of leadership will continue to inspire all of us.

Chief Curiel leaves big shoes to fill, and with his endorsement, I have tapped Deputy Chief Johnny Reyes to step into them. Beginning today, Deputy Chief Reyes will be acting Chief. On July 18, I am asking the Board to approve his new leadership role permanently. I know he will continue the positive trajectory of our police department, spearheaded by Chief Curiel.

Under Chief Curiel’s leadership during the past seven years in the district, the department has gained the equipment and resources to keep officers at the forefront of technology in their safekeeping efforts. Dispatchers have the ability to assist officers through high-tech equipment, and our 24/7 anonymous reporting system receives calls routed to us from other districts because of the department’s commitment to round-the-clock monitoring. The department is one of only three in the nation to be bestowed a fully-equipped wellness center through Planet Fitness so that officers can maintain their whole health – body, mind, and spirit. Soon, our department may be among the first to wear body cameras for full transparency. For these achievements and more, the SAISD Police Department has earned the respect from the State of Texas.

Just as importantly, Chief Curiel has emphasized building strong relationships between officers and students. He encourages his officers to be role models and mentors to our district’s 45,000 students. Through their daily service, and through neighborhood-building events such as the annual Trunk or Treat and Christmas with Santa, he and his officers are seen as leaders of the community.

I hope you will join me and the Board of Trustees at the next Board meeting on Monday, July 18, to honor and thank this great man for all his contributions. We wish Chief Curiel well as he and his wife Gina begin a wonderful new chapter in their lives.

In service to the SAISD familia,
Jaime

Police Chief Joe Curiel
