On behalf of San Antonio ISD and its Board of Trustees, Board President Christina Martinez and I issue the following statement:

We cannot and should not avert our eyes to any humanitarian crisis – whether it happens across the world or in our beloved city. Our hearts share the pain of the families and loved ones who now mourn 50 lives lost in the back of a truck right here in San Antonio. We send hope and strength to more than a dozen others now struggling to survive from the heat and lack of water.  
  
We are all driven by a natural instinct to protect and provide for our families. We empathize with those who are forced to make extreme and difficult decisions for the well-being of their loved ones, such as the people who lost their lives yesterday.  We see these victims as our sisters and brothers, and we hurt when they hurt. This event causes heartache throughout our entire community. Counseling is available to anyone in our SAISD family who needs assistance processing this tragedy and the pain and suffering that come with it.

No podemos ni debemos ignorar una crisis humanitaria, ya sea que pase en otras partes del mundo o en nuestra querida ciudad. Nuestros corazones sienten el pesar de las familias y los seres queridos que ahora lamentan las 50 vidas que se perdieron en un camión aquí mismo en San Antonio. Les deseamos esperanza y fortaleza a más de una docena de personas que ahora están luchando por su vida debido al calor y la falta de agua.  
  
Todos nos sentimos impulsado por un instinto natural de proteger y proveer para nuestras familias. Nos identificamos con las personas que deben tomar decisiones extremas y difíciles por el bienestar de sus seres queridos, como las personas que perdieron sus vidas ayer. Consideramos a estas víctimas nuestras hermanas y nuestros hermanos, y sentimos su dolor. Este evento le ha causado mucha tristeza a nuestra comunidad. Habrá orientación disponible para cualquier miembro de nuestra familia de SAISD que necesite ayuda a fin de procesar esta tragedia y el dolor y el sufrimiento que la acompañan.
