Letter: Safety in SAISD - Sept. 21, 2022
09/21/2022
saisd policeDear SAISD Familia:

We are very thankful that all of our students and staff from every campus, and especially Jefferson High School, went home safely yesterday. I’m sure many of you heard and watched news coverage about a call made to the non-emergency number for the San Antonio Police Department that reported a shooting on the Jefferson campus. Yesterday’s incident highlights that the district and city are prepared for a unified approach when a crisis occurs. The call prompted an immediate lockdown and a large and confident police presence – 29 district officers and 58 from SAPD. Officers conducted a room by room search of the entire campus and found no evidence of a weapon or a threat. All students and staff were safe, and we are extremely grateful for this outcome.

I want to assure you that our unwavering priority is to keep everyone in our care safe from harm – every child and every staff member. We want to take this time to emphasize our school safety protocols and to assure you that our entire district and our police department foster a safe and secure learning and working environment. We take every reported threat seriously, and yesterday’s lockdown was necessary to secure the safety of everyone on campus. We have a strong relationship with all local law enforcement and first responder agencies so that our efforts are coordinated to better serve the community and schools. Yesterday, our officers worked seamlessly with the officers from the San Antonio Police Department as part of our unified command protocol.

It is important to know that for the safety of all involved, when a school is locked down, students and staff cannot be released until officers determine that the threat has been resolved, give clearance, and lift the lockdown. Safety-first is the procedure we followed yesterday, and will continue to follow, so that you and your loved ones remain safe. We encourage families and staff to allow officers to follow the best-practices protocols they have in place. To aid this process, in the future, we will deploy district staff to the campus grounds to keep families on the scene informed of what is happening and the status of the reunification process.

Additionally, our communications protocol is to reach out to families through the contact information we have on file and to also share information on the district and relevant campus channels, including websites and social media platforms. Moving forward, we will enhance our capability to share information through text messages. At any time, families may update their contact information in Frontline.

As a reference, families and staff may also refer to our Aug. 11 safety town hall for additional details about our school safety protocols.

We fully recognize that yesterday was discomforting. We understand your concern, and we empathize with all of you. You are all part of the SAISD Familia, and all of our students are like our own children. We will do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe from harm.

In service,
Jaime
