Dear Steele Montessori Families and Staff:

We are deeply grateful for the productive dialogue we engaged in during our community meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Your thoughtful contributions to the discussion of Steele Montessori Academy’s relocation were invaluable.

At the end of the meeting, I announced, based on the input, that the district will retain its recommendation to relocate Steele to the Forbes Elementary School campus, located at 2630 Sally Gay Drive, 78223. The Steele name will continue at the new site, and most importantly, the Montessori program integrity also remains intact.

The new location will be in effect for the 2024-25 school year.

During the meeting, we addressed some of the concerns and questions voiced, and we reinforced the following commitments:

• The Forbes facility is structurally sound, is in good condition, and has larger classroom spaces, which is advantageous for Montessori programming. The Forbes campus also is located next to a park, another benefit to the Steele community.
• After winter break, school tours of the Forbes campus will be scheduled so families and staff can see the new space. Virtual tours of the Forbes facility also will be available.
• All current Steele students, including the new 8th grade level, will fit within the Forbes facility without the need for pods or portable buildings, and the facility will accommodate a small growth of about 30 students.
• About $19 million in bond funds will be used to add a new wing to the Forbes facility, along with a few minor renovations to the original structure. The new construction will allow Steele to address its waiting list. Even with growth, the quality of the Montessori program will continue to be reinforced and strengthened.
• A transition team dedicated to ensuring the relocation goes smoothly will be put in place. This includes safeguarding even the smallest pieces of classroom resources, making sure these supplies arrive to their new destination.
• Transportation needs will be taken into consideration, and more information will be forthcoming on how the district will ensure the transportation solutions accommodate Steele students – including making the original Steele facility a hub site for transportation.  

We recognize that a relocation is a disruption to a school community, and we appreciate your openness to this move. We truly believe that the Forbes site will better serve your students and staff, and we look forward to supporting your evolution into an even better Montessori program at the new location. It is an exciting time!

We will continue to communicate with you to keep you informed during this period of transition, addressing your concerns and questions as well as informing you of the progress toward the coordination of the move.

Estamos profundamente agradecidos por el diálogo productivo que entablamos durante nuestra reunión comunitaria el martes 12 de diciembre. Sus reflexivas contribuciones al debate sobre la reubicación de Steele Montessori Academy fueron invaluables.

Al final de la reunión, anuncié, en base a las aportaciones, que el distrito mantendrá su recomendación de reubicar Steele en el campus de la escuela Forbes Elementary, situado en 2630 Sally Gay Drive, 78223. El nombre Steele continuará en la nueva ubicación y, lo que es más importante, la integridad del programa Montessori también permanecerá intacta.

La nueva ubicación estará en efecto para el año escolar 2024-25

Durante la reunión abordamos algunas de las preocupaciones y preguntas expresadas, y reforzamos los siguientes compromisos:

• Las instalaciones de Forbes son estructuralmente sólidas, están en buen estado y cuentan con salones de clase más amplios, lo que resulta ventajoso para el método Montessori. El campus de Forbes también está situado junto a un parque, otra ventaja para la comunidad de Steele.
• Después de las vacaciones de invierno, se programarán visitas escolares al campus de Forbes para que las familias y el personal puedan ver el nuevo entorno. También habrá visitas virtuales a las instalaciones de Forbes.
• Todos los alumnos actuales de Steele, incluyendo el nuevo nivel de octavo grado, cabrán dentro de las instalaciones de Forbes sin la necesidad de módulos o edificios portátiles, y las instalaciones darán cabida a un pequeño crecimiento de unos 30 alumnos.
• Se utilizarán unos 19 millones de dólares de fondos de bonos para añadir una nueva ala a las instalaciones de Forbes, junto con algunas remodelaciones mínimas de la estructura original. La nueva construcción permitirá a Steele solventar su lista de espera. Incluso con el crecimiento, la calidad del programa Montessori seguirá reforzándose y fortaleciéndose.
• Se creará un equipo de transición dedicado a garantizar que el traslado se realice sin contratiempos. Esto incluye salvaguardar hasta las piezas más pequeñas de los recursos del salón de clases, asegurándose de que estos suministros lleguen a su nuevo destino.
• Se tendrán en cuenta las necesidades de transporte, y próximamente se ofrecerá más información sobre cómo garantizará el distrito que las soluciones de transporte se adapten a los estudiantes de Steele, incluyendo la conversión de las instalaciones originales de Steele en un centro de transporte.  

Reconocemos que un traslado constituye una disrupción para una comunidad escolar, y agradecemos su disposición a este traslado. Creemos sinceramente que el sitio Forbes servirá mejor a sus estudiantes y personal, y esperamos apoyar su evolución en un programa Montessori aún mejor en la nueva ubicación. ¡Es un momento emocionante!
