We have a responsibility to stand up and speak out - June 3, 2020
06/03/2020

Dear SAISD Staff:

The events we have been seeing in recent days and weeks are more painful reminders of the injustice that remains in our world. We see the anguish, outrage and frustration over the senseless killings of George Floyd and so many other black citizens – and the systemic racism that continues in our country.

I want our students, families, employees and community to know that we join millions of Americans in calling on officials to thoroughly investigate the death of George Floyd and to prosecute – to the full extent of the law – all who participated.

We have a responsibility to stand up and speak out for those who aren’t heard.

We have a duty to not only follow our mission to educate our students – of which 97% are of color – but also to empower them to know their rights. This includes the right to live in a world without bias and hate and the right to achieve their dreams. Our students – and children everywhere – are a positive force for change.

As educators, we must focus on our students. We must work to ensure equity within our school system. Yesterday we posted a letter from Board President Patti Radle, in which she asked “What is our role to protect the future of the children we see now in our classrooms?” We encourage discussion at your campus and department to answer that question.

It’s more important than ever that Districts like ours advocate and empower our students.

Sincerely,
Pedro
