Today's State of the State address - Feb. 5, 2019
02/05/2019
Dear SAISD Staff:

Today, Governor Greg Abbott held his State of the State address in Austin. I was honored to be invited to attend and be recognized in the speech.

His address outlined his priorities for this legislative session, and one of these priorities is school finance.

Our District has been active in sharing our views for the current session, particularly around the need for more funding for schools, as well as more funding for children from low-income families like many of our own students.

The Governor has recognized the academic progress our District is making with high-poverty students and is seeking ways to support districts like ours. He is taking a closer look at the work we are doing with block analysis to determine if what we learn from the socioeconomic data can also help the state better align poverty funding in Texas.

The Governor’s attention in this area is encouraging. Overall, we are pleased with what we are seeing so far in this legislative session and its focus on public education.

Following his State of the State address, we reached out and shared the following statement with the Governor’s Office:

“We were very encouraged to hear Governor Abbott lay out a comprehensive vision for what school finance reform looks like in Texas earlier today. By making key investments in early childhood education, creating a tier of weights to recognize that it takes more resources to educate students based on their level of poverty, and investing in dual language education among other essential priorities, it is clear that the Governor wants to make significant investments in Texas public schools while lowering the rate of property tax increases. This message set an excellent tone for the session, and we are excited to work with the House and Senate to ensure these historic investments can become a reality.

With a healthy budget outlook, now is the time to make the needed changes in the system to benefit our future students. In San Antonio ISD, we are committed to helping the state meet its goal of ensuring that at least 60 percent of Texas students have post-secondary degrees or certifications by 2030. The additional support that the Governor is proposing will help provide the necessary resources for our students to contribute toward these outcomes.”

I look forward to continuing to update you on the current legislative process. Throughout this session, I will keep you informed of what our District is doing to support school finance reform and the education of all of our students.

Sincerely,
Pedro
