Honoring outgoing Trustees - May 7, 2021

Dear SAISD Staff:
During our Board meeting Monday, we will recognize two outgoing Trustees for their years of service and dedication to the students and staff of our District. Both Debra Guerrero and Steve Lecholop were bold in their governance and made decisions that were best for our District, even if they weren’t always popular with small numbers of our community. They worked tirelessly in support of our schools, and I have a high regard for their leadership – both within SAISD and in the greater community.
Ms. Guerrero, a fifth-generation SAISD resident and former City Councilwoman, served as our Trustee for nine years. She was a fierce advocate for her constituents in the Highlands High School feeder pattern, with a focus on raising expectations and setting schools up for success. Through her committee work, she also oversaw the overall District’s financial stability and sustainability. Ms. Guerrero will continue to participate in neighborhood and community organizations throughout San Antonio.
Mr. Lecholop, a proud SAISD parent, served as our Trustee for eight years. With mindset of an attorney, he was always looking out for the District when assessing policies and changes in state law. Mr. Lecholop advocated on behalf of SAISD and our students both locally and at the state level – and he was very effective. As a former teacher and a Teach for America alumnus, his passion for academic excellence was a guiding light for his constituents in the Brackenridge High School feeder pattern, and he helped put all students Districtwide on a clear path to a successful future. His commitment to education is unwavering.
Please join me in sincerely thanking Ms. Guerrero and Mr. Lecholop for their confident and courageous leadership. Both of them were incredible thought partners for me, and during difficult challenges, they were sound counsel. They prioritized our children every step of the way. They leave as their legacy a stronger SAISD.
