Dear SAISD Staff:
It is with great joy that I share with you that today President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing June 19 as a federal holiday. Beginning with our 2021-22 school year, SAISD will begin observing Juneteenth National Independence Day as a school holiday for all staff.
Although tomorrow is a work day, I hope we can all share in this historic moment in ways that are special to us. Juneteenth National Independence Day is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983. We have looked forward to this for a long time.
Today’s announcement comes on the heels of a multitude of tragic events that sparked racial justice protests across our nation. I hope this is one, major step toward healing.
