EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

The District’s Early Childhood Education Program includes the federally funded Head Start program and the state and district funded Pre-Kindergarten program. Both programs are free, full-day and serve 3 and 4 year olds.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN
HEAD START

PRE-KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION

The SAISD Pre-K program is free of cost to all families. Priority is given to 3 & 4 year olds that meet TEA qualifying criteria.

Ages served: 3 & 4 year olds

To qualify for Pre-K a child must be 3 or 4 years old on or before September 1.

Priority enrollment will be given to students meeting at least ONE of the following TEA criteria. If your child does not meet any of the above criteria, the student may still be enrolled pending space availability.

Eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch.

Unable to speak the English language.

The child is homeless.

Receives SNAP, TANF, and/or Medicaid benefits.

Is or was in foster care.

Dependent of an active-duty U.S. military member.

Child of the Star of Texas Award recipient.

HEAD START INFORMATION

Head Start is a federally-funded program operated by the City of San Antonio in collaboration with SAISD as a part of the district’s Early Childhood Education Program.

Ages served: 3 & 4 year olds

To qualify for Head Start, a child must meet at least ONE of the following requirements. If your child does not meet any of the above criteria, you do not qualify for Head Start.

The family meets Head Start Income Guidelines.

The child qualifies for the McKinney Vento program.

The child is in foster care in the state of Texas.

Receives SNAP, TANF, and/or SSI benefits.

HEAD START ENROLLMENT TIMELINE ▲
Beginning in February, we will be accepting applications for all potential Head Start students. Applications and registration is ongoing until all Head Start slots are filled.

Beginning in May, 90% of families will be notified of selection and Head Start campus.

Beginning in June, 8% of families will be notified of selection and Head Start campus.
Beginning in July, we will finalize the remaining 2% of Head Start enrollment.
